Agreeing to disagree, but I still think harshness is partially related to how old the smoke is.

I agree that good pot seems to expand in your lungs and that you have to inhale less of it. I don't need to perform a test to know that - experience, ya know. But, do a test for me. Do a bong hit. Then, take the same pot and pull the smoke up into the bong but don't hit it for a minute or two. But, Really - don't do this - it will kill you! Basically, I think there are various reasons for coughing up your hit (which is what we are really discussing, right? [IMG]).

yeah that's what we are discussing here:the reasons for coughing, right. and what then is the "thing" in cannabis smoke vs tobacco smoke. that "thing' in cannabis is the large quantity of oils, that what makes sticky buds sticky, and the tobacco leaf just doesn't make quantities of similar stuff to do it's nicotine in. It's a fairly dry and fragrant leaf and when you burn it there's not the amount of volatile oils evaporating like what happens with the cannabis flower and small surrounding leaflets when theyare burnt or heated. IT'S THEM OILS THAT MAKE YOU CAUGH. Hope you got it now. b1

i disagree, i think harshness has to do with how uncomfortable/painful smoke is.

you can cough and not think twice about it, but you cant escape the pain that different smoke invokes.

coughing is just an element of harshness

thats why its subjective to the usere on what they think is more comfortable

And as far as the blood vessels go, i can be pedantic and define pain as a signal to the body of injury, which would be the signal to the blood vessels to expand. :p
