Even if you didn't like srv, you got to give him some credit, he breathed life into the blues In THE 80's!!! An era dominated by pop and hair metal.[/QUOTE]

But let's face the facts on that one. Some of SRV's most heard tracks from that era were from David Bowie's "Let's Dance," album.

    :D word...

like whoever mentioned it before in this thread... SRV was a typewriter... he reminds of one of those guys that can play, but gets lost when you get into a jam... that is, i think his stylings would sound like musical masturbation if you threw him in with MMW, or someone in that vein.

Back on the SRV thing eh....

What does him having a guest spot on David Bowie's album have to do with anything? That's like saying Eddie Van Halen's most heard track is from Michael Jackson's 'Beat it.' That means and says nothing. SRV had plenty of his own songs that were popular on their own, especially for blues.

I've come to the conclusion that some of you guys smoke crack. Have you seen SRV in jams at all? If we were to consider jamming competitive, He outshines the other person in pretty much every single one i've ever seen.

OK I was saying in respect that most of what was going around was in your words "mostly pop and hair metal." Well it wasn't just one song it was a whole album. If it wasn't for that one album we wouldn't be having this conversation. SRV would have only been well known amongst blues afficianados and locals in Dallas. As for the Hendrix vs SRV thing I have absolutely no opinion. I heard an old Iggy Pop song with these Lyrics
    "Which country's strongest?
    Who plays the best guitar?
    Who fucking cares?"

I figured I dropped shit on Hendrix I figured I'd spread it around. I'm just glad there isn't as much crappy outtake shit of SRV to be released.
    Peace Out,

Ugggh.... Well i disagree but i'm tired of the argument and it kind of strays from the original topic anyways.

^ This made me laugh tho.

I think it's funny how this thread brought out the head in everybody. I think I said in one of my earlier posts that I am a bass player. I'll go on to say that I'm one of those weird bass players that didn't start out as a guitarist. One thing I find absolutely hilarious about guitarists is they have long drawn out discussions about which guitarist is amazing and which sucks ass. Bassists don't have these conversations. I have yet to hear 2 bassists have a knockdown drag out over who's better Jaco or Stanley Clarke.

    Peace Out,

^ That's true. Although I do hear often if one bass player is like "I like Michael Manring" then the other one is like " Oh you like Michael Manring? If you think he's good you should check out Victor Wooten" or something that to that effect which is close to the same.

Some people build up guitarists, (especially Hendrix) to this like mythological figure status and everyone else who plays a somewhat comparative style or was around the same time sucks.

    Hendrix vs. SRV
    Hendrix Vs. Blackmore
    Page vs. Iommi
    Satriani Vs. Vai
    Hedges Vs. Mckee

    .....and the list goes on

It seems as if it does happen with other instruments usually if it's only in the band (Lee Roth vs. Hagar), but i do hear it with other instruments as well.

    Like Drums:

    Peart vs. Bonham
i'm pretty certain jazz drummers do it alot as well.

    ........i'm rambling

It's funny also a little off subject. I think one of the stupidest things I've heard rock guitarists say is, "If I take lessons I'll just end up sounding like my teacher."
My standard reply is..... "Do Larry Lalonde (Primus), Kirk Hammet, Charlie Hunter, Alex Skolnick, Steve Vai and the rythm guitarist from Counting Crows sound anything like Joe Satriani. Fuck they hardly sound like each other. Yet they're all Satriani students."

There is no such thing as a "Self taught musician." If you put on a record and learned anything off it then you aren't self taught you learned from the Schmuck on the record. If you learned from a transcription then you learned from the Schmuck who wrote the transcription.

Finally I think that musicians who claim to have no influences are so full of shit that their eyes are brown. I've heard this line of shit from alot of punks. Unless you were placed in a sensory deprivation tank at birth and are still there now and have never heard any music from nursery rymes to bird songs and are such a severe sociopath that you don't know what human emotions are that is the only way you can not possibly have any influences.

As I was writing this I thought I was getting off topic but I realized that these things are extreme extentions of the head mentality.

I don't know i've heard some pretty shitty punk before. Definitely doesn't sound like some of them have any influence from music. Maybe influence from rusty chainsaws, farts, and vomit from to much smack.

I have to agree with Samson, I had the good fortune of seeing SRV in concert once and it remains in the top 10 of the hundreds of concerts I've attended. The man was amazing, yes he did Hendrix covers to a tee, but he was alot more that that and was probably the most passionate guitar player I've seen.

    Cool.
I hope you can inspire more like you.
Lord knows we could use a lot more actual bass players in this world.

I'd damn near kill for a devoted bass player right now...:(

When it comes to bass, I'm a Scott Thunes-head. :D
