Guess I am the only one so far to vote no... I don't plan on it, nor do I want organs of another being in my body. It's not a religious preference, more so just the voices in my head speaking. When my time is to pass, due to organ failure or otherwise, it will be time to go.. no prolonging of life. When my time is up, I will have learned all I can in this body. As to that, I wish to be buried, in full form, so I can returned to earth as I started. Either that or go out in a viking funeral.. somehow it's illegal in the states but I know a lot who would respect my wishes and do it anyways. I just don't have faith in the science of things... It's great that we can do such feats, I just personally cannot do so. I have come to terms with death, being dead once already, it really isn't anything to fear, just another adventure for spirit.
So, what do you think about the idea of organ donation being default (at 18 at least) and having to check a box 'no donor' instead?
i signed one.. then my Ma threw it in the bin because she doesnt want me bein opened up and stuff when i die i'll get another one tho
Well, thats an approach there that I wouldn't like, not being of hassle of having to do something, but more of the like said from OP stuff, data base could be faulty... not up to date in some cases. Could get kinda courtroomish(new word, yay) too for that family that's dead father was harvested when they wanted to see him in his last finest moments before he hit the dirt. For being a old-time computer coder and CAD engineer.. I don't trust em.. hence why I don't own one today(only hijack some ones for a few moments). While still a good hearted idea, I just don't see how an elective way of passing on being mandatory unless marked and archived for 80+ years. Plus recording the information for that long, means just another billions of people database to add to my worries of what else could be being implemented to it's use, and what could go wrong. I've lost face in this race... well, space-age race. It opens a lot of opportunity and ease, but scares the crap out of me of what problems will come from it. I'd rather use my old crank coffee grinder and write a letter..
You don't own a computer? Space-age is the way to put it! I've never heard that comparison before. I see what you mean. I've just always felt that since so many don't check donate but don't seem to have strong feelings on it, it should be default to donate. But I guess maybe the government should do more to encourage donating instead.
No, I don't own a computer, or house.. or car in general(just relieved myself from my van I live out of). I live out of a backpack and a music case, only time I get the use of a computer is when I'm adopted for a night, an apple store on the street, or when I'm visiting family family. After bring brought up in programming during the brink of computer age(90' Apple II) and working in CAD engineering.. I have lost my trust in what they can do, so I strive on limiting myself of microchips and focusing on a "handcrafted" lifestyle. As for government pushing donating.. yes, they should, much like voting is pressed. Same with condoms(though the ad's they do have are great) and many other issues that seem to go unnoticed in hope the average parent/school will inform you on.. which lacks in Amerika. General life information seems to get missed with the hope that common sense kicks in.. and most people lack, their common sense.
I don't think there should be organ donor cards, organs should be taken freely from the dead no card needed or any of that crap. Dead people don't need their organs. This system would save a LOT more lives of people in need.
Well, I think the thing is that we've never realized how much of a divide there is in America between the educated and non-educated. Common sense for a baby and a toddler and a child and a teenager and an adult should be way different. Common sense for a hoodrat and a suburban mom are going to be different simply through the type of intelligence that is needed to live those lives. But since the explosion of services like Google and Wikipedia and Yahoo Answers, and the "every man" style of marketing, and the idea that one product can do everything being believed -- people only want to be as smart as they need to be. And the lines are blurring between the differences. Before when we said "common sense", we knew whom we were referring to. Now, I'm not so sure.
I just got a new license and it has a little heart on the front of it, thought that was a pretty good idea.
Yes we definitely need more people signing organ donor cards. Like earlier in the thread, I had mentioned that I had received a liver. It looks like my body is really falling apart- I am going to need a kidney pretty soon: and just for normal blood types, the wait is anywhere between 4 to 6 yrs. So with my rare blood type, who knows how long I am going to have to wait. Please sign your donor cards today- the life you save might be mine! LOL. PAX
I've signed mine. I donate blood whenever I can too. Except when they don't speak English. That's not racism, I just want to be able to communicate with the person sticking a needle in my arm. Here there are a lot of those blood donor buses that park around schools and the grocery store and there's even Spanish writing on the bus and I'm almost a little insulted they just assume I understand them. That's living in South Florida. But enough of that, I donate regularly and would give my organs upon my unfortunate death. What would I use them for when I'm gone?
I am a organ donor, and from reading another post it sounds like there are a lot of us who are. Wouldn't you think that if there are that many donors out there that the waiting list would be getting shorter?
