Have you ever read a book you didn't like, put it down halfway through, and told other people you weren't a fan of it? I read up until I saw things like virgin being thrown around, and it seemed a little too catty.

If you say the rest is worth it, I may check it out. But from what I saw, meh.

I may be a little overcritical... I'll consider that.

 

All you really need is a basic understanding of the universe to join in on the conversation. a basic understanding coupled with an active imagination can take you a long way

I'm not saying the thread was worth it at all. It certainly wasn't worth it to me. I'm saying that it was worth it to the people involved in the argument and giving a resounding objective label like "pissing contest" to it isn't fair.

 

the majority of my close friends are friggin' geniuses. and i honestly don't even think you're that far above average intelligence. anyone who claims to have learned calculus in 20 minutes, never learned calculus in the first place. personally, i passed calculus while sleeping through it at 17.

The difference between with how you did calculus and how I did calculus is you did it holistically, I did it heuristically.

I learn math heuristically, it makes sense, doing systems of equations was always a waste of time, it was just trying to teach you the mathmatic truths and mechanisms behind it, but most math teachers want you to know how to do systems of equations

truth is, it's just breaking apart ratios.

Calculus is the same thing, that entire year in high school? it's just the same boring retread crap, over and over again, when you're just trying to learn a few SMALL BASIC concepts.

it's stupid.

just learn how it works, then start applying what you already know to the math.

most of calculus is "okay, learn this one thing, and here is how you integrate this small one thing into everything else you've already learned"

well, if you already understand what you've already learned, it's NOT hard to put in another module.

The first 2 parts I agree with you. Not everyone is equal but everyone has the ABILITY to learn SOMEHOW. Ive been around it. hell I have a disability which is part of the reason why I got pissed off on how you went to this subject.
I grew up with therapists all my life, hand and speech, my brain development got better, my speech got 90% better and my arm can function day by day.

disabled or not, dave. people are "smart" in their own ways. Non-disabled just have to teach them day by day

sure your dad couldnt throw a football but you can still sit and talk with him and talk a walk with him because he still knows what you are saying. he just cant speak or have that amount of knowledge that you have

 

yes, calculus can be simplified into a 20 minute version. it's called heuristics. keep kidding yourself, smart guy.

if it helps the india\pakistan version of the book is about half price, shipping takes forever, and the paper is thinner, but it's worth the savings so long as you don't abuse the fuck out of your books.

I'm proud of my attributes. I was the only kid from three ghetto schools in the counties gifted program (not to say that there weren't many more ghetto schools that didn't have any at all, but I was the only kid from the three schools I went to)

I don't even know what's going on here. But I'm going to go ahead and say I have put myself in my sig because I like the pic. I think it's a friendly way to end a post. Like hi, here's my face, this is me. Instead of just signing a name. Like looking someone in the eye or something. I think it's rude and cheap to bash people for that. Maybe you don't feel comfortable with yourself in your sig, that doesn't mean you get to tell other people they're conceited for it.
