You cannot really count on wikipedia for completely accurate info, but even if that is true, "significant, acute complications" occuring in 1 in 500 newborn procedures is actually a high (not "rare" as is claimed in the article) incidence of complications when you consider how widely performed and routine the procedure is.

The "severe to catastrophic" complications mentioned in the article, is essentially reffering to the accidental amputation of the penis during the procedure. The first time this was brought to my attention, was the tragic story of David Reimer. And although it is true that such severe complications actually are rare, I have read of several different incidences where this has occured.

Because every surgery, no matter how routine, carries an element of risk, I feel that any non-essential surgical procedure should never be carried out without the patient's consent.

Well they can, it's just not required. Not being picky, just wanted to preempt whatever idiot was going to say, "I'm Catholic and I'm circumsized, so there!"

 

well obviously, anyone can can get circumcised by choice.individual choice.i was just pointing out that its not part of the catholic religion,as circumcism and check out catholic pics on google was all stated in a way like its something ta do the catholic faith.i assumed anyone who read the o.p. post would understand what i ment when i explained that. i forgot ta add we're not a cult either.

In the US many catholics are circumcised.

I am uncircumcised and was only one of two in my whole graduating class (there about 100 boys).

I was ashamed and embarrassed about my foreskin for years but as an adult grew to be so grateful that I am uncut. That foreskin gives me so much pleasure and my wife absolutely loves it. It adds so many possibilities to sex.

I feel sorry for men that are circumcised.

 

but clearly you do not feel sorry for school children that are cut.

well, as an adolescent I was more concerned about the fact that I was different. The macro social issues never were part of my 13 y.o. psyche.

 

I had my son circumcised. The decision was as much his father's as mine. Religion had nothing to do with it. My husband had been in a military hospital when he was in the Navy and shared a room with a young man who for health reasons had to be circumcised as an adult. He said that the extra pain that it had caused his roommate was ample reason to opt for circumcision of his son at an early date. My husband was of course also circumcised, no problems were ever noted.

 

I like my 'mutilated' penis. He and I are good friends.
