The dreads in those pics are very maintained. It appears to be a lot of backcombing combined with a lot of palm rolling and perhaps crocheting to keep the top looking that tidy. Using T & R or neglect, it would be well over a year before your dreads came close to resembling those in the pics. Even BCing you will be waiting quite awhile, but you would likely find you have your desired results sooner. Hope that helps.
Uh, I am pretty sure backcombed dreads look like a "rats nest" as well as any other method. You'll see how your hair looks in a little while, I doubt it will -not- look a mess. To the OP: Those pictures do look very maintained so you may want to consider crocheting them either in the beginning or later on. I'd suggest twist and rip, because I think it looks a lot nicer/neater at first than backcomb and later on around 8-12 months you could always crochet them to keep them "neat".
if you want locks like that, use the dreadheadhq kit, use wax sparingly, then have someone crochet the hell out of them. They will look manufactured, boring and fake just like what you want.
I want my dreads to look like that too, but I'm gonna wait until I hit 6 monthsish before I start the maintance.
