I'll have to say Hendrix, barely. Though Page is definitely way, way, way up there. I have the Led Zeppelin DVD set, and Page is simply unbelievable to watch, especially on "White Summer."

I actually copied the Hendrix Experience hair when I was in school! I had nappy hair in kind of a fro. Hendrix could play the shit out of psycadelic music, but page was talented in many different kinds of guitar playing. It's really hard(haha) to say.

sorry, i unintentionally exaggerated. played well in many styles, whereas hendrix was nowhere near as diverse.

and i stand by his being overrated. everyone hails him as the best guitarist ever, something he is definitely not.

kreutzman baby!

and you do have a point... page could (and i assume still can) play in many different styles. as a songwriter, hes ok. but hendrix is a style unto himself... and, personally, i like his style of songwriting better than pages... lets just have jimi come down from his cloud and the two of them can battle it out... ill be there!

as far as instrument playing talent, i dont think they can be compared. they are both equally talented, IMO. as far as creativity and originality go, i think hendrix beats page hands down. i dont think theres any comparison in that respect.

Bill Kreutzman... but I can't really judge Mickey Hart fairly because I haven't heard anything with him playing drums by himself. What should I listen to to hear that?

As for Hendrix/Page, I'd say Jimmy Page has the edge of Hendrix for song writing. Hendrix was probably a better performer overall, however Page was just as good at his best... which after '75 i don't think he really managed to return too :(

Jimmy Page had longer to explore his musical abilities than Hendrix, who knows what Hendrix could have done if he lived on?

Stairway to Heaven is alright, esp. if you are a LOTR fan, but that song is way overrated. *Sigh* I guess I have to agree with PR.

In my opinion when talking about guitarr players it all comes down to live playing. Both are excelent, but Iv'e heard some Led Zeppelin concerts that just blew my mind. Songs that last 4-7 minutes on a studio record, last two times its size on concert Just download "whole lotta love" live at the Madison square garden 1974 or Heartbreaker at the long beach arena 1972 June 27th. (It's not like those 2 are the only ones just a couple examples) Hendrix plays awesome also but I vote Plant for president

What has Stairway to Heavan got to do with Lord of the Rings? Thats only speculation that the two are in some way connected, the only person who does know what Stairway to Heavan is about is Jimmy Page and so far he has'nt revealed what the song was about.

As a fan of Led Zeppelin I can say Stairway to heaven is great rock/pop song of its time. There are lots of other songs that show their great musical talents and blend of blues/hard rock:
-You shook me
-I cant quit you baby
-Dazed and confused*
-since ive been loving you
and so on...

**exhales*

Come on, "She shines white light and wants to show how everything still turns to gold." Just ONE of the many references in that song.

I agree with the idea that Jimi should come back and battle it out with Page. There might not even be a winner, but we would sure as fuck hear some awesome fuckin guitar playin.

Actually Robert Plant wrote the lyrics to the vast majority of Led Zeppelin songs, Stairway included. Page wrote or co-wrote the music to virtually all of them so any Lord of the Rings references (which there are plenty, more notably in Ramble On and The Battle of Evermore) are down to Plant (unless Page suggested he put them in which I suppose could be possible). Hendrix in my opinion was much more experimental and original as a player and a songwriter where as Page was more conventional but also more refined. Page also had a greater diversity and could play in any number of styles on both electric and acoustic guitars yet wasn't as inovative in any of them as Hendrix was. However in the latter years of Led Zeppelin's carrer Page's playing began to deteriorate through heroin abuse, and unfortuantely for all the Led Zeppelin fans outhere (me included) Page has been unable to play live in recent years due to back problems (probably because of all those low slung Les Pauls he used to play). In conclusion once guitarists get to a certain level of playing ability it's very difficult to say who is better or worse. It's like an art. No one can definatively prove if Da Vinci or Michelangalo was better and no one can prove if Page or Henrix were better, they're just different. Why does one have to be better than the other and does it really matter? They're both great guitarists.
