Some great entries! I'll add one that I bet few of you have seen... Leonard Bernstein's "Mass." It is now out on DVD, though I've not seen that version. The last airing that I know of was on PBS in September of 1981, and it seems that THAT production's film was lost or destroyed. Same with the premier performance. Gone forever. Hm...what a coincidence. The stage play was very controversial when it came out in the early 1970's. President Richard Nixon supposedly sent the FBI to monitor it, and its Latin lyrics were examined for "subversive" messages. I guess the word "pacem" was considered too pro-communist. Interestingly enough, I've read a review of the the DVD version, and supposedly it completely omits the Celebrant's act during the climax- he knocks the Bible off of the altar, breaks the candlesticks, and basically wrecks the set as he sings "Pacem" ("Peace"). Hm, what a coincidence that it was omitted... I'm not bragging here because my part was insignificant, but one of the most amazing experiences in my life was participating in a production of "Mass" in the early 1970s at Ohio State University (I was in a boychoir). At the end, as we walked into the audience whispering "peace be with you," it sort of frightened me- being that I was just a little kid- but everyone was crying. Never before or since have I seen an audience so completely blown away by something. I remember some woman saying "God bless you" to me, through almost hysterical sobs and tears. I wasn't flattered- I was shocked. It kind of scared me.
Dazed and Confused The Wall Waynes world I know most of em weren't made in this time, but they really portray hippies in a positive way.
The Love-Ins! I loved the movie so much. It sort of made me consider both sides of the lsd/hippie movement, and it has great music. I also enjoyed Shortbus, though it doesn't have too much to do with physical hippies, it represents freedom and self expression.
Rude awakening Anybody saw this one? In the 1960's, two hippies go off into the jungle to evade the FBI. They come back to New York in the 1980's.
Gotta love ya for mentioning Billy Jack. And also for being in Iron Mountain/Kingsford, where my roots originate from.:cheers2:
