"Oh no" is an appropriate name for that poor dog.

I suggested earlier that Pressed Rat waggle his penis at tornadoes to show them who's boss, but something tells me this would not be a good idea in your case.

For 400 pounds of bear I would have taken my chances shooting

Especially with him at my back door

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often where you are. You make the location sound very remote. There has already been one bear killed this year inside the Winston-Salem city limits.

oh they come through every year about this time on schedule. when the blackberries are ripe they come through.
i have had them get in the old feed shed years ago,a couple years back we had one bed down about 20 feet from the back porch with the old dog asleep on the back porch. thats why we went and got the pyr.

its not unusual for them to come on other peoples porches. i hear stories every year but this was a bit unexpected and having the little dog get swatted across the carport was unexpected to say the least.
when you here your dog yelping a death yelp and your old lady screaming "its a bear, its a bear, he got oh no" with fear in her voice,, i assure you its a rush..lol
i dont think a battle hardened green beret would not feel a rush from that moment..

he obviously intimidated our pyr because he is terrible jumpy this morning..lol well hopefully there was enough commotion last night that he wont get that close to the house again.

im sure the pyr will do his job once again which is warning us something is wrong but like i said its obvious his first encounter with a bear has made him a bit more on guard than normal..lol

Wow! Glad to hear that everybody is okay, the feed shed wasn't gotten into, and that the dogs got away unscathed!

I would have been sooooo terrified. You should have seen me last summer when the family and I went camping. We stayed in a tent shelter, which was pretty cool, but I KNOW the one night there was a bear lurking about. I heard growling, and in the morning, I saw big ol' paw prints in the mud by the door, and also prints on the door itself.

Well after that, every night we went to bed I would literally lay in my cot shaking, I could not, for the life of me, fall asleep. I kept looking at the metal screen of the tent shelter door, scared to death that I was going to see a big black bear looking in at me. It got so bad that I ended up getting myself sick at night from sheer terror. I had to run outside the tent shelter in the middle of the night and would start vomiting, all the while stricken with fear of a bear being nearby.

I almost locked myself in our van and slept in there, but didn't want to leave the hubby and kids (who were oblivious to my panic, sound asleep). *laughs*

Hubby thought it was humorous how freaked out I was. I didn't find it funny at all, I was seriously scared to death! During the day I was absolutely fine, it was at night that I would start flipping out.

Needless to say, I didn't got a whole lot of sleep on the camping trip, I don't know how I even managed. I was probably running on pure adrenaline. :D

just got back from a damage survey.. no real prints due to the rain but plenty of minor damage. he tore a bunch of the shingles off the roof of the feed shed, peeled some of the metal back off the bottom of the feed shed door, stepped through the roof of the tool shed, destroyed both doe rabbits water bottles and left prints on the door of their cages and chewed up the little coffee containers we use to scoop out feed with. oh and tore one side of the greenhouse up a bit..

fucker.. guess i know what i am doin when it quits raining.. patching roofs..

Why not get ahold of animal control?

Or just drop him? 12-gauge shells cost far less than new shingles, I'm sure of that. Plus, you'll have some food. Because if you keep pushing your luck and letting him come back, soon enough, something bad's gonna happen.

He and his wife have already seen their fair share of shit from the government involving wildlife, and he lives in the mountains. If he kills this one, what good is it going to do? More will just follow in his place.

lol we did when we bought the great pyrenees..lol its said that two of them can kill a bear. its what they were bred for..i kinda wanna wait till old dog kicks the bucket to get another one. he is 16,old and worthless but he still weighs a hundred pounds and eats his fair share of food. three 100 plus pound dogs to feed would be a bit much with everything else we have to feed around here.
oh no knew something was out there, thats why he charged out the door.this damn cocker spaniel is brave or stupid.. he has no fear. his nickname is captain bravo..lol

i already answered that in this thread in great detail.

Oh, sorry. Yeah, I didn't get a chance to read pages 2 or 3. Which is really hypocritical of me, seeing as I get annoyed when people say stuff without reading up on the information. Mah bad...

I've only had experience with a couple bears, so I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm just going on theory, now.

I'm thinking that if you pick up some emergency flares, you should be able to light one and throw it out there. I don't imagine a bear would like it too much, and it should be a safer alternative than sending the dogs out. It's not going to keep the bear away permanently, but it might keep him out for a day or two...

Holly crap! Glad you are okay.

Although it is reassuring that I am not the only person that has to deal with wild animals.:)
