I pronounce it car-mull. My friends all pronounce it care-uh-mell.

Also, I've always written in carmel, which is probably why I pronounce it 'wrong'.

"Car-mel" is something different. It's a name. Means garden of paradise, like an Eden

It depends on where you are from, for me mel and mell are pronounced the same and mail and male are pronounced the same: but the two groups are pronounced differently. Some people may pronounce all 4 words differently.
