Christian tradition says the the Virgin Mary married Joseph when she was a young teen--i.e., thirteen or fourteen. Catholic tradition says that she remained a virgin all her life, even though she gave birth to Jesus. Should we be accusing Joseph or God of statutory rape, or should we just recognize, as our Muslim friends are saying, that cultural standards were different back then.
Which part, the virgin of the Mary? Whether or not she was really a virgin, and whether or not she really existed, I think there's plenty of backup for the proposition that marriage at ages we would consider "underage" were common for her time, and that of the Prophet Mohammed. Marriage had a whole range of social functions that are absent from the contemporary scene.

Well let's talk about harems, shall we. Under Muhammed, all wives had to be treated equal (I believe there is a story about how Muhammad wanted to have sex with one of his wives, but it wasn't her turn so he had sex will all over them just so he could have sex with her...which would probably really hurt without lube). The harem is also important economically, and for the survival of the family to produce a male heir, etc... How did the harme get associated with a "sex group", well probably victorian British colonialists. So, it isn't the media in that case. Wahhibism is also another instince where the media plays no role. Yes, many violent groups are the only ones to get coverage, but it doesn't stop other people from understanding it. I'd say it is a more problem with apathy than the media. Who makes the news, violent muslims who act, or non-violentmuslims who do not act 9on the world stage?)
