dok, i know exactely what you mean. and i think whoever said that the majority should speak out more is right, but its not always that easy...... there are posts on here that i agree with or strongly disagree with but depending on what type of mind i am in at the time, sometimes i don't respond to it. to get into a detailed debate requires some time and energy and when im sitting in the comp lab at uni, i don't think its the ideal situation. also i have found that when i do try to make my point through my own inarticulate-ness:p i fail to get my point across or someone directly attacks me to no positive gain whatsoever.

i think its fair to say that a lot of us feel this way, which incidentely is why im glad you are on here. your opinions-even though i may not agree with them all!- brighten my day that someone feels so strongly and is willing to speak out no matter what is thrown at them.(even if its naked 'lesbians' with dildos! )
people like the ones you described come and go, and i think thats where the clique-ness(sp) in this forum comes in, i don't think ive ever met up with a racist chiristian fundamentalist porn star.... well unless you count kev of course....ahem...;) so perhaps its a good thing or a bad thing but if we all thought the same thing then there would be no forums and it would be boring, and unstimulating. im glad we have those in the world to challenge our views and help us form our opinions so we can know ourselves better and have stronger view points and a result.

No i don't suppose, but oi am a veggie but some of the veggies scare me around here ? Others inspire me and others well like myself are prety (thats it just prety[IMG] ) . Sharing the same sacred cows and not seeing if they are true or false and just perpetuating the same mindset is a form of brainwashing i think. Hearing someones loopy ideas mine yours him hers whoever is a lot more benefitial...well i think so anyway. Comeing to places like this (you may think the enemy) i have learnt a lot.. and i am not as mad stupid (whatever) as i thought. Its all a learning experiance ....... its all good [IMG]

Nope of course not claire , anyway i stay away from personal forums here because its filled with like minded people wishing to discuss shared beliefs ... its a bit unfair to start a debate in places like that if you don't share the same ideals... out here its fair game [IMG]

I'm interested.. why the attack on porn? what's wrong with it? I agree with you on the rest of the list (all bad things), but what's wrong with porn?

Then there are those of us who advocate peaceful protest... ;)

But yeah I asked the same thing with my "conservative hippies" thread a while back. I think there's a tendency for people to cling on to supposedly "alternative" viewpoints and perhaps not realise quite how conservative and reactionary those views are. Fundamentalism is a good example of this. No matter if it's christianity, animal rights, conservatism or Marxism, fundamentalists are usually pretty scary people. Just because it's not mainstream does not mean its alternative or "hip"...

Do you draw a distinction between fundamentalism and extremism? I'm not a Marxist fundamentalist, because I don't want to rip up over a century of social theory and take Marx right back the the basics. But I am an extreme leftie and a radical in thought....

I think in both instances, the problem is when people's beliefs blind them to reason. Once you stop listening, you stop learning.

I'm wondering if anything else can be added to this list ... maybe

    • drug abuse
    • promiscuity
35 years ago when 'hippydom' came into its own we experimented with drugs, free love and plenty of other activities that have been known to produce heavy casualties, either physical or emotional. If we are progressing, should we be turning our backs on these things because of the dangers involved and the victims that came out of the early days of counter culture?

    Also what about
    • smoking
    • alcohol
    • meat eating
    • driving
Again these are things that some of us see as harmful to ourselves, others and the environment and many see them as perfectly ok. So if we are to progress and develop do we need to think about our views on these other 'socially acceptable' practices?

I'm not saying we should change everything about the way we think overnight but I am saying that maybe we should always be prepared to question or challenge our own values, to ask why we find some potentially harmful behaviour ok and other behaviour less acceptable?

(I think this reflective psycho-social stuff I'm doing at Uni may be taking a toll on my brain)

I absolutely agree, Paul. While people here may well partake in any of those activites, I'd be saddened to see them defending them as a good thing.

Meat eating? I don't see anything bad about meat eating in itself, only with the processes used to pruduce the meat....
