wondering about this, , ok prior to storm , waves be nice, but how long after would the water be safe of debris. and where does all the washed out shit go. do we make no efforts to clean it up . I get we clean the neighborhoods and roads, but what about the water ..do we just say fuck it to the sea?
There will be surf advisories for the beaches. Most of the debris is busted up stuff that the wave action will eventually deposit onto the beach. There have been instances of things floating out to sea and the coast guard looks for that kind of stuff.
I don't know, but on the news, idiots were actually surfing ahead of the storm. Seems to me the onshore wind would close out all the waves, but people were out there, instead of, ya know...evacuating .
Please stay safe everyone threre!!! Yes they were... THEY SHOULD BE FINED FOR NOT LEAVING AND NOW WANTING TO BE RESCUED!! Idiots......
Some of these "idiots" can't evacuate because they don't have the money to. Not everyone has the funds needed to evacuate . Hotel at $100 a day, plus food in restaurants, gas, and oh yeah do they still have a job if they leave for a week? Some might not have a car that can make the several hundred miles journey to wherever. Not every "idiot" that stays, does so because they are happy about it.
^in a mandatory evacuation zone no one's place of employment is open. Half of SC has been shut down since Wednesday. I cant speak for NC, but SC opens shelters throughout the state and sends school buses to pick up people who do not have transportation. And I assure you anyone staying in a shelter is fed for free, people are kind and generous during disasters. I'm sure NC has some sort of system in place too. There really isnt an excuse not to evacuate . I've also seen where kennels have opened their doors to evacuated pets for free also. No excuse to leave your pups behind either! People are kind and willing to help during disasters
Pet owners have to find shelters that take pets. Not all shelters take pets and the ones that do fill up fast. Lots of motels/hotels don't allow pets other than service dogs. I have a friend that lost her dog during Katrina. She was reunited with the dog because she spotted her sitting on top of a van during a news clip. She had to call the news station, talk to someone who remembered seeing the dog and knew that it was rescued and went to an out of town shelter. It was a long, heart-wrenching process but she did get her dog back after she moved back home to Atlanta.
Thankfully with smart phones its easier to find these now when you're on the road evacuating Pet Friendly Evacuation Shelters for Hurricane Florence Was probably harder during Katrina But thats awesome she reunited with her dog
Yes and we were all sorry years later to learned that Nola was ill and passed away. They left Atlanta after they got back on their feet and moved to Gulfport, LA. Here she is, Nola The Wonder Dog. This happened before I met the owner so I don't know the particular's of where the girl was during the storm and how the dog was lost, but this is her place after Katrina.
All true. But they get filled. They all do the best they can, but there are always some that can't get out. And not all companies are tolerant. If they open for business, they give a reasonable return time. But again, last ones out, have to take the farthest hotels out. And yes Nose, I agree some are simply ignoring the idea they should leave. All in the name of catching a wave shouldn't mean we bail them out. And if someone builds a house on the ocean, I am not gonna bail them out when they lose it Well not if I can help it anyway.
No sweat. It's easy to forget the realities some face. Storms are hard on everyone. Twice as hard with those with less means. It's just easy to forget them. I was with FEMA for a few years. It opened my eyes.
^^^ @Aerianne I feel so bad for that lady and that poor dog...just all of that, that I can't "like" your post...but have to say that is enough to put tears in my eyes. for real. dang Regarding not evacuating...there are so very many shelters here in SC I can't imagine there not being something very similar in NC. The ONLY reason I can comprehend not evacuating on the coast would be if you had animals you couldn't evacuate. Like me with all of these cats. I would never be able to get all of these cats out of here...and I absolutely would never ever leave them. Never. And that's the truth. Thank God I'm way inland. Granted I live under a literal canopy of trees but still...I'm not going anywhere. When feeding the outside cat (the one that was abandoned when the people moved out of the haunted house behind me) she had moved her kittens to a much closer place and I SAW THEM! There are 4 fat black with a touch of white babies. They were born Sunday and I'm scared if I try to help her move them with the upcoming "weather", she might reject them. I do have some plans of what to do to shield the area where she has them. That'll be the best I can do. She only recently began not growling while she eats. Anyway, unless you absolutely HAVE to stay, I don't get these people that didn't immediately begin making plans and leaving.
FEMA!!! OMG! no really...I'm not being sarcastic or anything but in awe. That would have to be a seriously hard job. Lord have mercy. There I go with this thinking mess I'm trying to avoid. lol Anyway...kudos dude. I have the greatest of respect for you guys. I don't care if you aren't there now...you will always be the person you were when you worked there, and to be called to work that kind of job is very special. For I do think that would have to be a calling.
Makes sense. I bet you have came across some really sad situations South Carolina doesnt do a whole lot right but our hurricane preparedness is top notch.. A year or two ago when...i cant even think of the name of it, but when Hurricane ____ hit, the schools here locally closed so the state could use their fleet of buses, then some of the schools were used as shelters. Most of the buses came back empty, actually. But at least they were there for people who needed them Maybe NC doesnt have a system like that, I dont know. LA certainly didnt when Katrina hit. Thats really sad though, any state that could potentially get hit by a hurricane should have a system in place to evacuate people without transportation or hotel funds
