Well, it took less than $50 of materials all told, Could have done it for less if I'd scrounged, honestly, I think the water pump might go out, which might put it into the $60 territory to get a Good industrial grade low flow pump, but, that's not bad, really. they also have decent prebuilt ones, some of which are really pretty reasonably priced for what they are, but, I like figuring things out in a component sort of way, so this was the only way to do it.
As a general rule I don't buy things I could make better myself. Good for you, what all do you want to grow? Tomato and basil are amazing, you should grow a mozzarella plant too.
I don't think cows grow hydroponically, and even then, the lactation.. iffy, I'm not sure what all I wanna grow yet, I know a few things I don't want to waste my time growing because it's too easy to grow otherwise, and I know a few things that are on the definitely list, basil is just to test a plant with that structure, and it's probably going to be the first one transplanted out (prolly for celery) the tomatos are staying, we're building infrastructure for them (going to set up "tethers" instead of tomato cages) and we're going to try to amp up the speed of some squash growth because we've got some clones of a plant that rendered 500 lb pumpkins, and we wanna have a giant jack o lantern for my nephew. if we can utilize this MUCH shortened growing season and get those ready by halloween, that'd be great. we're going to use a watermelon plant as control, we're growing one in the dirt, and one in the planter, and we'll see how that does. if it is growing bigger in the hydroponics, we know we're doing it right.
