I strongly agree with what some of you were saying about how one should not waste the clothing that they have owned prior to turning vegan. It truely would be an insult to the animals if their deaths were for no purpose. So, if it is a newer vegan that hasn't yet bought vegan clothing in order to use their clothing that they have already owned first, I can understand that. The people that are calling themselves vegans and buying new leather jackets or fur coats, however, would not be considered a vegan in my perspective. If they want to consider themselves that, there is nothing that anyone can do to stop them, but I feel that it is disrespectful to people who truely are vegans. I am vegetarian, not vegan, but I do not tell others that I am vegan just to say it. Someone else raised a good point of how some people only have a vegan DIET for health purposes and not for ethic reasons. In that case, their food choice is vegan, but their lifestyle is not. That's just how I see it, but I am not the judge of who is vegetarian, vegan, or anything else in the world.

lucyinthesky16, I just wanted to say that I respect Native Americans and would never think of them in the same way that I think about factory farmers. Native Americans have respect for the earth around them, which is more than I can say for a lot of people. You are lucky that you have that running in your family. A lot of my friends are part Native American, but I am not exactly sure if I have some in myself. I would love to find out though one day :) .

The points brought up here are extremely valid and thought-provocative. Certainly there is a difference between being a dietary vegan and followng a(n) homeopathic, vegan, philosophical lifestyle. Hypocritical is a very strong word. Most humans are not totally consistent with their choices. We give children cocoa, but forbid them coffee. Both beverages have caffeine :)

so what about a guy making items to sell from leather he bought at Tandy Leather (the usual case) ? is it OK just because the consumer is of a specific tribe?
I think the romantic notion of "it's OK becuse they are Indian and they respect the earth" is a stereotype.
The tribal councils who broker deals with Peabody coal are not thinking of the planet first. I hope that many do consider it in the balance with getting jobs, but their job, so to speak, is to look out for the welfare of the tribe, and like any politician, each individual has his or her own methods of doing that. Some are more thoughtful and inclusive of concerns beyond food and roofs. Some are working in a crisis mindset.

In the day of bison with ear tags, respect for animal life is individual. Luckily traditional families are still teaching it.

But it is dangerous and false to treat tribes as a single entity, with a single lifestyle and a single point of view.
