I hear you, HippieChick, and agree. Just because a person believes something and they don't rub it in a person's face, they are still "judged" for it, I have found.
I've even seen posters ( trolls) go out of their way to put down a person's beliefs/religion. These same people often will intentionally misinterpret as they see fit, overlooking tenets, chapters, etc. - again, as they see fit.
Yet, this intentional mocking is drawn more to people's beliefs than anything else, I think anyway.

You criticize religious people being generalized, yet
you generalize those that are militant against theism of being trolls and intentionally mocking

You even go so far as to claim that people on the Internet are mostly mocking of people's beliefs, when I am getting mocked by a fellow atheist for saying certain comments of hers were out of line.
(Actually, I even mocked her for mocking me, then she mocked me more)

I don't even bring it up anymore around friends and family. I won't even begin a discussion unless someone else asks for my opinion, which I don't mind letting them know my stance on the issue at that point. I've lost several friends growing up, and certain family members "distanced" due to me questioning their beliefs and asking simple questions about religion and god. Plus, the fact it NEVER gets anywhere and most always the other person will never change their mind no matter how bad you stump them in an argument.

I thus keep these sort of discussions strictly internet for several reasons, but mainly the annamosity of it all. Also think the people that are "on the fence" or "unknowledgable" of the topic feel more comfortable having discussions over a forum based medium and find it easier to communicate unlike face-to-face.

    Ever hear of democracy?

There's a difference between debating and blowing up skyscrapers.

But don't you think that if someone is running for President and you find out that they deeply believe in preposterous things, that that should matter to you? Shouldn't it make you doubt that this person can be trusted to make the right decisions for you and your country?

Religion arguments never get anywhere. Unless you like wasting your time, there isn't much point in bringing up someone's religion or lack thereof.

If you enjoy what you're doing; you can't be wasting it.

Debates are often an affirmation of your own beliefs more than they are a competition of each others; religious should certainly respect that aspect.

I've learned a lot about myself and others by debating theology; and I have learned away certain misconceptions here and there; even if my beliefs have changed on their own, independent of any debate.

I don't make fun of religion as long as people keep it to themselves.

I belong to the church of Doing My Best to Act Like a Decent Person. We don't murder people, or molest children, or tell our children that they are bad (sinners)...

Surely you shouldn't make fun of the religion whether people keep it to themselves or not?
