they have serious problems. They were most likely abused as children, and it delayed their sexual maturation. In any event, it is disturbing and I wish there was something we could do to make the internet a safer environment for children. There has to be something...But at the same time, I dont think its really anyones own fault they are a pedophile. I feel sorry for them, and if they were to ever act on it, it would be unforgiveable. And I do think that chatting in underage chatrooms would be considered "acting on it." So yes while I have sympathy for these poor souls, It is infinitely more important that we do everything to protect kids.

 

Sorry, there's nothing you can do. First of all, you lied about your age so that's entrapment. You could get around by not revealing how old you are but hinting that you are young. But anyway... if you're really concerned about it in the future you could keep up the act, add him as a contact, promise to do a 'show' later on in the week, call the police, and if they're not too busy you could let them handle it from then on.

so why don't we focus more on teaching our kids to be smart and to catch the signs of people who are out to hurt them, instead of always blaming someone else for the problems of society, and teaching kids how to be victims. instead of going on vigilante missions to "catch the creeps" work hard on educational material for kids and their parents so that both can be more aware of the "creeps" and how they might appear, and how to be careful not to put yourself in bad situations. it's like trying to tame a wild lion so he doesn't kill the bunny rabbits vs. helping the bunny rabbits become smart enough to not go near the lion. which is simpler?

Also, lying about your age is not entrapment, if they send me a message first, and they say hey how are you blablabla how old are you, that is not entrapment. if i said to them, hey i'm twelve and out here, come talk to me blablabla, THAT is entrapment.

obviously, as judgmental as your attitude is with all of this, judgment IS intended. and i have not seen anyone in this thread SUPPORT pedophilia, but i have seen several people who DISAGREE with your point of view. is this who you are talking about, these men over the age of eighteen? because i for one am a 25 yearold female who COMPLETELY disagrees with not only your vigilante missives but your unethical actions. you are inviting these guys to be "devious" and they are doing NOTHING wrong by talking to you, because YOU ARE NOT 12, no matter how old you look. not to mention, you are wasting your energy trying to "catch" people doing bad things, when instead you could be helping kids learn how to be smart with the internet, and helping their parents understand what the dangers are for these kids.

 

I agree these guys haven't done anything, at least with you, wrong. Not saying they're going to get citizen of the year award but that shit on dateline is flat out fubar. I used to work with a lady whose daughter was a cop and did this for a living because she looked young. If these guys had good lawyers they could crucify anybody who came up to them like this. Putting somebody in jail for intent...? That's a preemptive strike... so hell at least it's consistently american.

the ethics issue i have is that rather than trying to SCARE these guys, she is trying to lure them and report them. the whole thread started because she was pissed off that she didn't think she could send them to jail. she's been trying to figure out how to send these guys to jail, and many people are trying to help with ideas to entrap these guys that she enticed to begin with. when they haven't done a damn thing wrong that anyone knows about. and we can't send people to jail for things they "probably" have done before. nor can we send people to jail for doing things they haven't actually done. whether you look 12 or not, it's not a crime, because you're NOT 12. it is entrapment to entice someone to do something illegal, and then bust them for it. which whether or not she's doing it successfully, FinnishB is attempting to do so. and that's what i have a problem with.
