It's probably accurate as far as BASIC training is concerned.
All three e.gs are BASIC training.

only time will tell if our military is adequately re- adjusting these kids before they put them back in society.PTSD is a fact.
one has to assume they will do the same stand up job as usual.

The video was an admittedly ludicrous attempt to illustrate to vig that her thread title is making a broad generalization to a whole group of people based on the actions of a few. I think that was actually rather obvious to most people.

The rest of my rambling to illustrate that most go into the service with a sense of bravado and unrealistic attitudes about how "tough" new recruits often perceive themselves to be and when the shit hits the proverbial fan, attitudes change rather quickly. The rest was relative to the remarks about military training trying to illustrate that a large part of the conformity and supposed lack of independant thought goes a long way to keeping the soldiers from getting killed.
Plus if you ever notice, those who rant and rave about the military such as I see here and in other segments of the forums, never had thier asses shot at and been in the reality of life or death, him or me situations.
Vets will also complain about the military as well, but it is from a completely different attitude and for different reasons.

    Again, obvious to most people.

True after basic training they pretty much don’t fuck with you although the technical training schools which follow basic are also very structured like the one I attended at Sheppard Air Force Base; Wichita Fall TX (Home of the 82nd Training and 80th Flying Wing) [IMG]

Well that explains the high pregnancy rate among our female enlisted personnel :patriot:

thanks for the summary. last night was a long night.. your video made and still makes no sense to me as the original post was about soldiers endangering and disrespecting civilians. I fail to see how two people basically play fighting in their home is any comparison.

and you're right about the other stuff. my guess is that you served back when you are younger. the military has changed. my stepbrother's an officer, stepdad and grandfather are retired colonels from the old generations, plenty of enlisted friends.. I have a well informed understanding of contemporary military life and it is definitely not for me.

I've also come close to death a handful of times and fully understand that primal fear and the fight or flight response, but I have no idea how that applies to this discussion either as those soldiers were on a college campus not a combat zone.

I tend to like people in the military about as much as I like the people with gel'd hair and popped collars at the pub or the hoards of people wearing affliction and tapout shirts you see at a sports bar or UFC fight. no capacity for any type of intellectual or critical analysis, almost primitive.

There are all sorts in the military, unfortunately the loud/obnoxious ones get noticed alot more that the quiet intellectuals..

During my enlistment I came up with an idea for a hybrid all-terrain vehicle with true multi-fuel capability that would have offered (at least) twice the efficiency, greater stealth and redundancy than anything currently in use.. Unfortunately I was never put in a position where I could develop my idea.

Point is that you cant judge the whole by the few..

unfortunately that's how we work as humans, it's in our hardwiring to make associations so that we can develop aversions to unsafe, unhealthy or toxic things. heuristics.

sounds like a cool idea. I have a friend who did two tours and he is the most brilliant person I know. you're out there for sure, but your more brutish comrades stand in the limelight.

one thing important to note is that yes, there are lots of great people in the military. this i'm sure of. however, my experience the other day could mirror an exact experience that those living in occupied countries may have. and then they are left with that impression of the US.

You've taken one instant and extrapolated their whole personalities and the whole military's personality based upon. Or simply reaffirmed your preexisting biases.

And then mocked them for not being able to think critically.

You ever drive through a rough neighborhood that you are unfamiliar with?
Assume they don't speak your language and there are obvious cultural differences (so there is a huge chance for misunderstandings) ...Do you draw attention to yourself?

The situation our soldiers face is tense.... They are not whooping it up while on duty..
Granted some are going to act like asses in barracks, around the mess hall, motor pool, and especially while on leave where the threat of UCMJ is diminished.. (but not all soldiers can use sex for stress relief and/or as a coping mechanism)

While on duty however soldiers are scrutinized and subject to sever repercussions for any lack of professionalism.

Mind you I'm not making excuses.. I personally have never been one to publicly draw attention to myself "the nail that sticks out is the one that gets hammered down"
Only trying to assure you that what you might see at the local university parking lot isn't what the average middle-easterners sees in their neighborhoods and streets...
