Nah, I'm not taliking about other styles even, I'm talking about if there is a metal riff/short solo played for example at the A string, 12th fret, (A note) next time play exactly the same notes on the G string 14th fret. (A note) if its a riff you can even alternate. If you want to be a metal guitar robot, I highly suggest investing in a metronome. Example is Assuming standard or Drop d of course
I get where your getting at with the playing in different keys already but that's good for impro but like I said I like playing on key for other musicians music. Get a metronome? Four years ahead of you dude.
Oooh I thought you said earlier in the thread you didnt have one. Again though LOL you're not changing keys, that's simply moving to a higher octave.
It helps for sure, my guitar teacher always had me play along to the metronome pretty much every lesson for at least a little bit. Different picking styles is another suggestion, although this is one that I dont really practice at all, nor do I plan to. I'm pretty much strictly an alternate picker, occassionally some finger picking on the acoustic guitar. Various ways of switching down strokes and up strokes can add a different dimension to the playing. Sweep picking is obviously a big one for metal, finger style and chicken pickin I guess you can work on, Just adding some suggestions. I'm pretty terrible at sweep pickin and chicken pickin myself. I have only done it practicing but I would like to try it in a song, I do a pick hammer with my picking hand that creates a pretty cool stuttering sound, Needs to be controlled slightly better but may be something I incorporate into my playing more.
Not to sound like a dickhead or a mr.know it all but I do all that of what u mentioned. I usually do that in almost every sit down with my guitar. You know I love sweeping its my favorite technique. I love how my left hands finger glade across the strings in a good sweeping pattern. I love too how the pick goes down and up against the strings. Tapping also is one of my favorite technique since its so natural to me. Eddi van Halen don't got shit on me!........maybe that last statement as too cocky! . Also u forgot to mention Legato! Pretty hard for me at times.
You're saying your better than Van Halen... Why would you want to put the guitar down? I mean that's pro status, why not be content with your skills start putting some songs together or out and do the thing?
Lol maybe like I said before that last statement was too cocky but am not statisfied enough with my skills although I think I might never be statisfied. As for taking out music I haven't found a drummer and bassist at are aiming with high standards for musicianship, so am taking up bass and drums my self and later finding players that suit my musicial vision. Obviously I suck at drums and bass but that when these better players come in...t
Drummers have been really hard for me to find as well, Every good drummer I've found except one was in a band already. I have a pretty flat affect too so I think I dont come off as enthusiastic as I really am about playing music. I recorded some electronic music on my own last year. Pretty crappy program and songs LOL but it felt cool to get something done, and a few of them are tolerable. I want to make more music but unfortunately I'll need a new computer for that.
I think that you should approach any musician and ask him to join you band even if his in a band or not. I think musicians are always looking to jam with anyone. Also I read a lot of metal or rock biography on how musician asked other players to join there band rather if he was in a band or not. Yeah I bet its nice to lay down some music done by yourself and give it alisten.
don't put it down just keep going... relax... stop trying to be so tech perhaps and just enjoy it... let loose? that's my take on it anyway, for what it's worth...

I have one simple question for you. Do you get any joy from picking up your guitar and playing? Also Here's a cool site: http://www.chopsfromhell.com/ Here's another column from another site that I think could help: http://www.insaneguitar.com/column/ben-kuzay/self-expression-or-cosmic-reflection Stay brown, Rev J
Wow, all the talk of quitting is depressing. I just started taking lessons. I'm 51 and wish I'd had the chance when I was younger. Now, after a month of lessons I'm already thinking about the band I intend to start someday. I know not that many people are into James Taylor anymore, but I just found out that he has video lessons (for free) on his website. You just go to his site and watch the video. They're way too advanced for me, but the way his hands move on the strings is like the guitar is just an extension of his body; no thinking involved. His fingers just seem to move of their on volition. Anyway, I have to think that it could only improve the skill when transitioning to an electric guitar. I have the money now for the best equipment, but don't necessarily have the time. Take advantage while you're young, and don't give up. You'll be glad when you're older. Geezer out,
