I'm not going to reinvent the wheel and tell people I don't have dreadlocks because I'm not a Rastafarian. I'm going to use a common term that people understand, period.
who said anything about rasta? another common term that people understand is "locks" and it is more greatly accepted among all people with the matted hair style. but, like i said before, it's just an opinion.
well you haven't really said any other reason why they shouldn't be called dreads, so I assumed. I will now assume that my assumption was incorrect? I call them dreads, dreadlocks, locks, whatever.
I honestly do not think that "locks" would mean anything to anyone around where I live. Seems like we need to rename the forum.
the term dreads can be viewed as negative to some cuz the word dread has a negative connotation. Such as... I dread flossing my teeth everyday. Is that right vig? So....some Rastaz use the term locks cuz its more empowering. So I think. Ive actually never read that anywhere...just concluded that after thinking it over on my own. lol...may be way off! =]
all this nit-picking dread stuff is kinda annoying. if your hair's in little curly knot things that look like dreads, it doesn't matter how they were made, or if you're rasta or not, they're dreadlocks. and the "rasta mon" comment was in reference to a couple real rastas i met that told me about this aloe & seawater dread method. just clearin the air. :cheers2:
I prefer to call them dreads. Iunno why, I just like it better them locks, and I'm to lazy to type 'dreadlocks' every time.
Getting back to the OP... after having traveled around a lot, I frankly feel sorry for any American with some intellect and a sense of creativity who does not live on the west coast. I don't know what else to say, or how to say it more "nicely."
Vag, how is 'locks' any clearer though? To many, a lock of hair is definitely not a knotted piece of hair...you know? What would you have us all call our hair then, in a single word, in daily conversation? ...If I wear my hair in a ponytail, but have not actually literally put my own hair inside the tail of a pony, may I still refer to it as a ponytail, or is there some other terminology I ought to use? And pigtails...iggy:And bangs....do you have loud explosive noises on your head?:toetap05:
well I'm pretty damn happy where I am. I love cali, might move there someday, but Austin is my home. Maybe I'm just dumb and uncreative. lol @ amy, love the way you think
Texas is tight cheap weed cheap drugs from mexico and alot of places to fish and kick it plus we got some peyote
Well, if you are "dumb and uncreative" then I must be even worse living so far on the east coast of the US.. hell, I am on the east coast of FL I am totally screwed
we ask that non-horsifarians simply use the term 'tail' since misuse of the word pony could be offensive and degrading to my palomino brothers
once again, i never said anything about rasta. but, mandy's explanation is a good one. oh well, i just think it's ridiculous to fight about who's locks are considered "dreads" according to how mature the knots are. i thought i'd bring another way of thinking into the argument.
:\ i think this is a little overdramatic. don't make the midwest look bad as a whole, we got enough bad stereotypes as it is lol maybe in your own area - but there are plenty of big cities and even small little towns that couldn't give less of a fuck if you were fuckin orange. :cheers2:
I've lived in Chicago for almost my whole life and I love it there. I moved around to smaller towns and everyone is creepily friendly and lots of old men stare at young women. I like the unwelcoming attitude you get at certain areas in Chicago and I am so not use to being stared at or even told Hello in these smaller areas. So maybe people like to be treated differently but I know in Chicago no one said anything or looked at me differently and most of the time they leave people alone there. Here on the West Coast I have been looked at like I am disgusting or laughed at but frankly it doesn't bother me.
That bit makes sense... but I still don't get how you can tell whether someone has dreads according to your other method.
