Come to think of it that might be because I'm pasty white..... But nevertheless, I resent his whole pretense of african hair being better for locks..... Especially because I neglected and he backcombed.

thank you weeatoes i will continue to post, because i love looking at dread porn and i know all the other dreadheads/future dreadheads/past dreadheads do too! Thank you to you too roor... I would never say that black hair is "better" for locks, it is just different. One of the girls who lives in a room adjacent to mine (and happens to be caucasian) has ~4 years old locks and they are fucking beautiful and epic. The experience of dreads is definitely different for white versus black dreads though. Mine never fell out after backcombing, they were tight right away. I guess you could say my hair didn't need much convincing. It used to dread against my will EVERY NIGHT when I was a little girl. My dreads also stuck out way more, for way longer. Like, I had to wear headbands for like 5-6 months to be at all presentable. My roots are super kinky afro-curl, so before they locked up they made all of the rest of my hair stick up on end because it was pretty short. It was terrible, but I was 100% committed to having dreads haha. I never thought once about turning back. I also didn't really have loops. I had like... 5 and I have over 60 dreads. Most of the white people with dreads I know went through at least one super loopy stage, and then most of 'em got sucked back in. Also, my dreads never combine! Kelsey went on study abroad in some tropical area and had her dreads up for like a week straight and afterwards she had a beaver tail she had to separate haha. My dreads have never done anything like that; they don't eat each other. I guess it's the texture. One of the huge downsides to african-american dreads is that my loose hair isn't wispy strands or face-framing like white people hair is, and it doesn't lay down with the dreads... it is FRO. I literally have had dreadfro during several stages of my dreaddies, which is why I learned how to maintain every 6 months or so with a crochet hook. It does not look good when your hair looks like a fro with some dreads jutting out of it.
You know, if you just left it, it would have locked fine....... And you don't get congos because they happen from the roots, and you crochet the loose hair that helps that back in, which will also prevent second generation locks from forming. Also it's easy to sort of become dependent on ripping, the more you do it the faster they need it, which your friend may be doing.

Yowza! Locks are coming along very wel. I just hit the 3 year mark as well a few montgs ago. To me it seemed to fly by. Well, for the most part. I cant wait to see what thertll be like in another 3.
