Its still fairly easy to get rides, the rain really is a big influence. Due to reduced visibility, they wont be able to see you until they are close, and with that decreased time to judge many will just take the "Safe than sorry" route. Plus, you're wet, and you are going to be sitting on their seat. That takes out most but the truly sympathetic. And thats not to count the fact that people are more annoyed when driving in the rain, and gloomy rain is the stereotyped time when the hitchhiking ax murderers come out. (By the way, under the public perception that most hitchhikers are serial killers, and that most people who pick up hitchhikers are rapists, wouldn't those negative groups have easily killed each other off by now?)
I just think it's sad that society is so paralyzed with fear that if people see a fellow human being in need of a ride, and they are going that direction anyway, they won't stop to pick up a hitch hiker out of fear of being murdered to death, which in my opinion is highly unlikely. I for one would not be killing off people who were nice enough to give me a ride.
I used to always pick up hitch hikers. Then I moved to a place called Tell City, IN. On the way into town, there is a big sign saying, "Prison area. Warning: do not pick up hitch hikers." Or something like that. Kinda turned me off of it.
Are escaped convicts more likely to kill those who pick them up? I have no clue of the statistics, but I'm not convinced this is a "common sense" issue. If I was an escaped convict my priority would be to get the hell out of there, not to start murdering right in front of the prison. And aren't most prisoners locked up for non-violent charges? (I know jail is mostly drug charges, but I have no clue what prison charges have the highest percentages)
I imagine some of the nastier escapee's might at the very least take your car. I still pick people up, sometimes. Usually If it's really hot, or raining or snowing or something. Walking in the rain sucks big time. Wet shoes...ew.
