    Ladys and gentleman...

What's with the negitave energy carried by so many so called 'hippies' on here??

If you see someone is trying to do good, and help others, why not help them with that??

Why play to the same old typical derogatory nature that so called 'mainstream' people are controlled by??

If someone has a better or constructive idea to add...then by all means add it...

And the amazing thing is, you can do it by not putting anyone else down...amazing...

The need to put others down comes from what??

If you have a better solution, simply present it...

This is so elementary...I excpect more from so called hippies...

I don't expect typical human behavior...

I'm not a threat to no one, if you see me as a threat than you have internal issues.

I'm simply trying to help, by offereing contructive ideas...If you don't like or agree
    Than fine...

But state why, in an intelligant positive way...
    Why is that so hard??

Some of you younger hippies really do need to check yourselves...and lay aside
    the ego...

Don't just be hippie in name only...

    Your intent is appreciated, ghostchildd.

But until you can spell properly and write coherently, not many folks are going to accept your self-appointed status as a writing guru.

But if it turns your crank, by all means, carry on. :)

If you would read, and take in the content, that's my whole point...

If all one is concerned with is puncuation and grammer...than go back to school...

But if one is interested in content, story line and theme...than read on...

Your missing the whole point of this drill or thread...

One can have near perfect punctuation, but if they don't know the art of pulling others
into their story...what good is it??

Like handing a brand new guitar to someone who can't play

    vs

handing a old ragged guitar to a Hendrix type or Jerry Reed type...

Not classicly trained, but boy could Jerry Reed get down..

Most are concerned about story content than grammer...

Proper grammer and punctuation will not get anyone to read your story...

I used a music analogy on page one also...comparing glamour bands, that sold
    millions...

    To maybe a music major...
Who although is much more refined musically...will never sell to a sold out arena...

Once you learn the art of story telling...and hooks, and how to cut out unessisary fat...

And once your book or story catches the attention of a publisher...then believe me you

you can hire all the editors and spellers you want to grammerly perfect it...

But like a demo tape...first you must get heard...

Something to always remember. Just because it's a Hippie-ish forum, does not mean all people who frequent it are hippies. Vast majority are not. And even those who are...well pigeon holes and such, right.

Your intent is nice but your instruction just doesn't flow in a manner that makes me want to keep reading it.

The above is criticism. Not negativity. Deranger's first post was a valid observation. The second one had a vibe on it but it seems to have got your attention more than the other one did, which was probably the intent.

I think the best lesson here is that writers need to have a thick skin. They need to be able to take crit or negativity or down right rejection without getting defensive or accusatory over it.

You're sure right about having to develop a thick skin if you want to succeed at a professional level. Every writer I know collected a drawerful (or three) of rejection slips along the way.

But there's nothing like years of rejection to help keep the ego on the modest side when some success finally does come along. ;)

You're right that it's important that the reader be able to relate to your story on a personal level: it has to mean something to them. But the kind of advice you're giving just seems like it will produce boring work. Sure people can relate to all ten of the things on your list, but the list doesn't really help anyone, you know? Anyone knows that sex is a topic of interest that will draw people in, but it's deciding what to do with "sex" that's difficult. Also, not everyone is as interested in popular mass markets where the first impression -- "grabbing the reader within the first thirty seconds" -- is the most important thing. Many of the best books I've ever read were not this way. James Joyce, for the sake of a shameless name drop.

I'm talking about print publishing by the way, not web. It may well be that this is the best advice for trying to get work recognized online; that may also be one of the reasons I don't have much interest in going that route.
