Ya gotta live the songs. Go on tour. Get some wind rash, feel the cold while broke and desperate, scared, beat up, lost, busted, long for home, blistered feet and sunburns, sell stickers, grilled cheese, your ass, innocents lost, experience their world. Smile at the clown and then become the clown. Live the poets, rock stars, gypsy's, robbers, vagabonds life. Feel the spirit of Kerouac, Kesey, Ginsberg and see the vision of the band.Go on a tour and the song's come alive. Your the protagonists and the band plays and sings about you. Make it your world. Dead tours is an art. Take it home with you. You'll not be the same. Anyway, check out some of Jerry's early stuff, Reflections, Garcia, Cats Under the Stars Make a 'Best of' recording it's a great touring tape. Are you an artist, dancer, entrepreneur? ...shall we go...you and I while we can.......

for me it was 1977-1990 that really got me hooked.
go on archive.org start with some 77 shows:
people like 1977-05-08 and 1977-02-26 a lot (check out the terrapin on that show)
my favorite 77 show is 1977-05-15
(just copy and paste these dates into the archive.org search engine)
if 1977 isnt catching your interest I'd skip 78-79.
1980 their repertoire started changing a lot. check out the live album go to Nassau and check out songs like althea>lost sailor>saint of circumstance or feel like a stranger.
If you want more acoustic dead, check out the live 1980 release called reckoning.
then Id move on from 1990 and head more into the 1989-1990 scene.
Check out the 1989 live release truckin up to buffalo. listen to the not fade away, cold rain and snow, stagger lee, bertha, really anything off that album and you will fall in love.
Another great 1989 release to check out is the Downhill From Here DVD. Amazing music.
When you get into 1990 three important dates are 1990-03-15 (Check out this whole show. The Althea, Easy to Love you, but most importantly the throwing stones>not fade away. It will blow your mind. Especially the way it transitions from one song into another. )
Another is 1990-07-12 (Stagger Lee, Let the good times roll, the weight are all highlights or this show)
and 1990-07-14 (shakedown street, ramble on rose, eyes of the world, crazy fingers, and the throwing stones are highlights)
Some other 1990 shows that are great are the nassau colliseum ones in march release on Without a Net.
There..So thats what got me started. Definitely start checking some of those out.
If you wanna start earlier. Listen To Live/Dead (1969) or Europe 72.

Also, unlike most other bands, the more you become familiar with these songs, the more you love them. Never get sick of it.
