I would like to make one thread with all the terrible things coming from the south

Perhaps, then, since you have found a place outside the south even more terrible than either MS or AL, you should start a new thread, like "...terrible things that come from places where ignorant people live" Then we can try to find a place w/o an infestation oh ignorant humans.

 

No the south as an overall entity is still pretty damn terrible and is holding our country back.

Better yet, make it a public warning. If you don't mention nucular weapons, the Republican idots won't know to leave.

 

If the South is really all that bad, why do so many Yankees move down here, retire here, have second homes here and even move their businesses and factories here? There must be something good about the South.

I'm as liberal as they come. I grew up here, moved north for 5 years and moved back. The South cannot win a presidential election alone, in fact, Obama won despite the conservative South. Get rid of that damn electoral college and the Southern conservatives will loose the little influence they have in presidential elections.

Most of my current friends are originally from the Northeast. They all have quite a bit to say about how much higher their quality of life is down here. They claim to have found nicer houses, larger yards, lower taxes, lower cost of living, lower crime rates, less crowded highways, safer schools, milder winters, etc. They also say that we don't have nearly as many areas that look run-down and dirty. None of them are considering moving back north.

 

[SIGH] I guess it's because folks like us defend the place every time it's attacked by some ignorant Yankee. OK, Changed my mind! Nothin' to see here but the occasional lynch mob, y'all. It's way too hot & humid in the summer, and there ain't no snow for skiin' in the winter. Big ol' fat sheriff will throw you in jail if the tan on the back of your neck looks like you recently cut your long hair. Y'all just stay home & enjoy yourselves.

 

I can really agree with everybody here. The South is a mix of conservatives and liberals who constantly push each other to their limits. I think that's what makes it so interesting for me since I like controversy.

We've come a long way in the 20 years since the Civil War.

It's pretty hard to be racist when you live in the region with the highest percentage of African Americans.

But on the other hand, if we were to be talking about someplace like Maine (aka, Anglo-Saxon land)....

 

But we manage to find a way anyhow.

How do you guys think a black Southerner would feel after reading this thread? Almost nothing in it applies to them. Although they are a very large group here, most descriptions of the South ignore them completely.

 

Probably just like everyone else. Everything applies to blacks as well as whites. They go to the same sub-standard schools, live with the same cocky blue laws and have to deal with the same fat-ass Sheriff.

You're probably referring to lack of racial discussion in this thread, and that's good. On the surface, everything is copacetic; legally everyone is equal. There are some racists still around, but their breed is very slowly dying out.

Have you ever met a black conservative Republican? They basically don't exist. This thread has mostly discussed the attitudes and actions of a group of Southerners that is at least 99% white. In many Southern counties, whites are already a minority as the black percentage holds steady and the Hispanic population grows exponentially. If nothing else changes the Old South, demographics will.

I think you're wrong, there are more black Republicans than you think, and I've known many gay Republicans, too. Google "black republicans" and prepare to be amazed.

Uncle Tom will always be with us, in one form or another.

For those who don't know, Uncle Tom was a character in a play that was popular in Civil War times. He was an aging house slave who didn't want anything to change, even if it was for the better, so he played along with his white masters and told them what they wanted to hear.

You could write a book. There is something toxic in the white culture here, as there is in Germany. The deeply flawed thinking that brought us the Civil War and World War II shows no signs of dying out. In both cases, it's an inbred narcissism that rejects all outside ideas.

Maybe it's the liberal college in this area, but I see the younger generation changing for the better, a lot better. Most of the small towns around this area are still pretty white, but the more populated areas, like 10,000 or more, are pretty well integrated and are moving on.

Change always begins in urbia and slowly creeps out into the pagan areas.

As a demographic blacks are often pretty conservative on social issues, but basically never vote for the Republican party because, well it's the Republican party and they tend to not get along. For example, the current candidate in NY governor back by the tea party just had emails he discovered that as the man's own emails say, "Run niggers, run"

Tea baggers are hilarious. Get caught doing terrible things, refuse to respond to the liberal media who are just trying to smear you, gain 5 points in polls for "sticking to their convictions"
