my fourth grade teacher couldn't tell me and my best friend apart (don't know why, we didn't even look that similar) so we once swapped seats and spent the entire day as each other.
Bank called me and asked if I was in Mexico. Said someone bought $384 bucks worth of something south of the border in a Sears. They did it on my debit card too-with the pin# and all. They replaced the loss and I guess some family in Mexico is enjoying a nice new TV. At least the bank caught it,but thieves are relentless. I'll be paying cash for gas from now on.
No but some SOB did manage to steal my credit card number and booked a flight on Jazeera Airways out of Kuwait International Airport Really Hotwater
Yeah, stolen identity was a bit strong... but at the time I was a little freaked out. And for all I know it isn't over yet. I'll get all the money back, but it sucks because until I do I have literally no money in my account now and I am hungry and I also want to buy alcohol.
I had my identity stolen after using my debit card at a gas station a couple years ago. Someone used it to spend $450 at a casino in Macau, China among other purchases.
It's so funny how the world works. Usually people who find the credit cards post it online for others to use; so that it covers their own tracks, bad thing is that it usually ends up going international lol and by then it gets frozen
The credit company suspected that it was fraud so I was issued a new card at no penalty :2thumbsup: Hotwater
I had my identity stolen a few years back. It was absolutely terrible! Come to find out, someone got it from a gas station (before it was illegal to display card numbers on receipts). The gas station owner ran a report that had card numbers and threw it in the dumpster without shredding it. There were over a dozen of us who had our information stolen. Needless to say, I got everything back. But a word to the wise...avoid identity theft during registration renewal...the RMV doesn't accept "identity theft" as an excuse for a bounced check. Trust me, I learned that the hard way.
My card and two subsequent replacements were used fraudulently, and I traced it to an online tobacco shop in New York. I tried to tell the vendor about the problem he had, but his response was the expected uh-uh no way can't be me gotta be someone else. My bank was good about it so it didn't cost me anything at all. They've since changed their policy so I'd be on the hook for fifty bucks if it were to happen again. I never suffered amnesia during those events, so I guess my identity remained intact.
SOmeone stole mine and it tooks months to get it back. I thought an identity was something that you could not loose.
its never happen to me but, I would hate to be the person who did or wanted to steal my identity..lol.. just saying
Yeah, my bank will pay it back but it will take a few days. I am sure the person wishes they had picked someone else because it didn't take too many purchases to drain my measly account.
It’s always important to keep at least one credit card with a low limit of $1,500 along with your other credit cards, especially when you purchase an item from a questionable source. If the credit card company tries to increase the limit tell them no thanks Hotwater
Unfortunately nowadays a large percentage of true identity theft happens from malware and spyware stealing enough information from Windows PC's that a hacker to get the rest of your information with what he / she already has taken from your computer. Once they have your associated email account cracked, have changed the password then changed the email account associated with banks, sellers, County and State municipalities etc they can get credit lines in your name. I have a close friend who played for George Benson for years and was a top studio musician in Hollywood for the 60', 70's and 80's. He had accrued a lot of wealth even though he lives very modestly, he doesn't care about money he cares about art and creating it. A piece of spyware was written smart enough to search his Turbo Tax software on his PC and bam, he was the owner of 7 Cadillac Escilades and a custom home built in Boca Raton Florida before the bill collectors caught up to him. He had absolutely no idea his identity had been stolen and it cost him hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix the issue. Me, I'm a fucking hippie. All my wealth and consumer whore-isim is tied up in my recording studio, my instruments, guitar amplifiers and PA. Plus, I'm a mac user and I don't have to worry about that stuff. I've seen it happen time and time again over the years but this guy, he's is a wonderful down to earth highly intellectual kind person. He certainly didn't deserve it IMHO. You Windows users keep that spy bot search and destroy updated and running!
Your indentity can't be stolen. You are you. to me your personality, character, who you are inside is your identity. Not a face or a name. But yah that sucks, I know whatcha meant.
