i would let him . actually i wouldn't mess with his decisions at all. (i do believe if i have kids at all i will have a boy). i think its a good thing at least to go to barrack, it makes you know yourself, it puts you in situations when you have to be rough and tough. makes you a man

I consider my nieces and nephews to be like my own children (in addition to my own two) and they asked my advice about this very subject. The first one I encouraged to join the army... he was having a lot of problems I thought it might give him some structure and direction. Big mistake. He was suppose to get out just as the Iraq war was starting and the army decided to not let him out. He went AWOL and is now living in New Zealand.

When my son and other nephew (the first one's younger brother) asked my opinion, I did everything I could to talk them both out of it. Fortunately it worked. Now younger nephew is working as a cop, which fits his personality and goals much better.

    Hmm several feelings.
1-The British Army is a joke. The officer ranks haven't changed much for 100s of years.
I'd say do u really wanna do sthg cos "Lord Prick's" son told u to?
2-They're the gimp of whatever place our current political slimeballs wanna invade and murder in.

I've risked my life a few times. But I'd never volunteer to be treated as cannon fodder to line someone else's pocket like that.
Sure an army life has great attractions, but there's sthg very dirty about it these days IMO.Which is a great shame..

I'd take him outside and tell him we're going to try a little experiment called bullet dodge, if you survive and you like it, you can join the military. Then I'd give him a three count head start and start shooting at him.

    LOL,i like that..

there was a time when i would recommend the military to anyone,at this point in time i cant do that.

i love my country and do feel its a persons patriotic duty to serve it but our leaders have completely lost their collective minds and joining the military now is supporting something i am completely against.

the coming war in afghanistan and pakistan will be bloody and long. its going to make vietnam look like a summer field trip to the beach.

I would be afraid for them, and wish they wouldn't chose that particular path, but I would also be proud of them for wanting to protect their country.

Hopefully none of my children will ever have a desire to join the military, but I'll support them no matter what because I love them unconditionally.

In the past I would say to someone interested in joing the military do what you want.----Many people have benefitted from being in the military.NOWADAYS I would say don't be a SUCKER,do not join period. And the easiest way to talk someone out of the military is to point out that wealthy people etc. and politicians children for the most part no longer serve-why should you?--Things sure have changed from WW2 when people from all economic backgrounds, celebrities, politicians children served.

I agree with that.I'll add from what I know there is NO WAY the US can possibly win or really do anything good there. The Russians got their asses kicked there.WTF is the US's problem anyhow! It would be nice if the US started minding it's own business for once and let these other countries sort things out themselves.

But Russia is full of pussies, but I agree. We really all need to focus on peace making, war only brings more war and NOTHING good comes of war.

    Hmm...

Well I think u've got Russia to thank for the fact that u aren't going round speaking German, wearing lederhosen, or saluting pictures of Hitler on your wall.

Would America keep fighting after 15million of its people were killed?Nope it hid away in WW1 and 2 til the end.And got out of Vietnam sharpish after 56 000 were killed.

Either way, yes it would be good if Amerika started minding its own business in the world. And *not* agitating other places too...

i think the insight gained by joining the military, conscious of all beliefs, is invaluable.

i did. i bounced out. served four years on sour kraut...rations and fears. i had the beers, the travel get-away-from-me queers...hit on me and the like....i rode even motor bikes...slept with icelandic dikes...klond. i favoriteted the blonde's.

I too love this country and although I believe this country still has one of the better governments that exist today, I do not trust or believe in any government and I do not trust anyone that believes he knows better than me what is good for me and my family.

And I believe if someone needs to be shot or killed that is something one needs to decide for themselves and not be told who, when and how many by someone else, for the burden of doing so weighs on you and you alone.

"It was hard how to know how to feel. I'd never been in a battle like this one. There was no dark political objective. This was not a fight for territory or riches, or to make men free. It had been fought to preserve the food stores, that would see us through the winter. To protect the lives of women and children, and loved ones only a few feet away." - Dances With Wolves

I would have them talk to my friend's son who just got out of the Marine Corp. After talking to him, and let me say he went in full of pride and gung ho and was involved in more than anyone in one lifetime should be, it would be up to them.

And no, I wouldn't like it. But I have always tried to raise my kids to use their minds and make their own decisions, whether or not I thought they were right or wrong.
