Well at first the bride wanted a 5-tiered square cake, then she opted for a 4 tiered circular cake. She wants fondant, which is awesome because that stuff looks so smooth on and is really easy to work with, vanilla buttercream underneath the fondant, white chocolate filling, white cake. Between each tier there is supposed to be a spray of fresh red roses, although the bride likes the look of the fondant roses and wonders if she might want those instead. Still undecided. But anyway, it's very basic. The accents will be done in royal icing and since that stuff dries hard like candy it can be made way ahead of time and then positioned on the cake with buttercream as a glue. It's not frilly, no drop strings, garlands, any of that. Just kind of modern, yet simplistic. The design is very pretty though! I'm just glad she didn't want one of those topsy turvy cakes that are all the rage now! I think they're super cool, I've just never made one yet, and although you'd think it would be easy (looks like a lopsided cake), the construction of them can actually be kind of tricky.
Okay, since you asked, here's another one of my favorites I've done. No, it's not a hat, although it looks like one, doesn't it? I actually designed the cake board to match the cake. Basically, I covered it in fondant, cut more fondant pieces out to decorate that, attached the pieces with a little water and a paint brush. I had a lot of fun doing this cake, makes me all happy, in the spring mood.
Here's another one..it was a birthday two days before Valentine's Day cake. White cake, strawberry cream filling. See the sparkles? I'm really big into putting edible glitter on my cakes. I just can't help myself, I absolutely love that stuff! *laughs*
Aww wow, those are gorgeous!! I absolutely love the first one, daisies are my favourite flowers. And wow, I've never seen a glittery cake, that's so clever. Do they taste as delicious as they look?
You make beautiful cakes HCM. I love my great aunt's german chocolate cake. It's the only chocolate thing my dad will eat. As for my favorite (sorry aunt Frankie) it's coconut cake.
Thanks! I did a cake a few months ago where I actually made edible pearls for the border. I took fondant, shaped it into balls, and rolled them in actual pearl dust (edible of course!) They looked exactly like real pearls. It was so cool, and it was the first time I had ever made anything like that before! It was an all-white cake. White cake, white chocolate mousse filling, white chocolate buttercream, and handmade snowflakes out of royal icing, plus the fondant pearls. And lots of white edible glitter for a snowy effect! It was really pretty, except I wasn't 100% happy with my border, seemed a little crooked in some areas (although it could have been due to the weight of the pearls), but the cake was for my mom and she absolutely loved it, so that's all that matters. Well I guess the taste would be a matter of opinion, but yeah, I think they taste pretty darn good.
Thankyou! I have a lot of fun making them too. Well, okay, sometimes I say some pretty explicit cuss words at the cakes while I'm making them if I'm not getting the effect I was hoping for, or the icing isn't smoothing like I want, but shhh, don't tell.
And then when people compliment you, you smile, and think, if you had only heard the things coming from my mouth while I was creating this beauty.
Those cakes are gorgeous HCM, especially this one! If I ever see you in a Food Network Iron Chef cake contest, I'll root for ya!
Why thankyou!!! Sometimes I fantasize about being a really well known cake artist, you know, the "must-have" kind, the one everybody wants for their wedding. My secret little dream, though I'm not nearly close to that point yet.
