Cosmic dust, I can assure you that at least some of the fighting McCoy's went barefoot. I live in the country near Reading, Pa., and about 27 years ago Paul Mc Coy moved to a small farm next to us. I got to know him and we drank together even though I was an admitted draft dodger from the Vietnam-era and he was a retired major from the Marines who served in Vietnam. Rednecks are like that.

Anyhow, his father, Hobart McCoy, lived next to him in a small house. He was 87 in 1980, and remembered his father talking about the feud. His father was Squirrel-hunting Sam McCoy, and Hobart wrote a book about him-- I have an autographed copy.

According to Hobart, his father killed over 10,000 squirrels in his life and went barefoot until he was way up in age, winter and summer. I believe him-- he didn't lie.

Hobart died quite a few years ago, and Paul moved to Maryland, but their son, Jim, a PA state cop, still hunts and drinks with me.

    THEY RAN BAREFOOT!

I think Chem-Lawn is still going by the same name. I find it peculiar that people enjoy buying the services of a company with a name like 'Chem-Lawn'. Sounds like pouring nasty chemicals all over your lawn. :)

I've heard that golf courses can be pretty nasty because of all the chemicals they use. It even keeps the birds away. One of the U.S. TV networks that carries golf shows dubbed in some canned bird chirping to make things sound more natural.

I heard on a TV documentary that those chem-lawn businesses started up in the 70s because there were excess chemicals left over from the Vietnam war and that lawn companies got them cheap from the government. Don't know how true that is.
