I'm not dreaming (or speaking) of a lawless, 'structureless society'. But I'm also not dreaming of a bureaucratic nightmare island with 1000 different committees. Do you work for the government, or just head up your local HOA?
Well spotted, salmon4me! I'm vice president of a national organisation in Canada. I can confirm for you from much personal experience: Bureaucracy blows. I absolutely despise long, boring meetings and uncomfortable disputes within a board/committee. Unfortunately, I think that nothing would get done if there weren't any regularly-scheduled, structured meetings/discussions regarding several different issues and needs. However, I don't like being perceived as a douchebag, so I'm switching sides. Paradise Island WOULD work without governance. Anarchy is NOT a flawed philosophy. Everyone WOULD live happily and peacefully on Paradise Island, and there would be little or NO need for labour nor rules & regulations. I'm glad I've re-thought my position, and I look forward to visiting the island (if you'll welcome a reformed cynic ). Peacelove, Aldousage P.S: salmon4me, why did you place single quotation marks on "structureless society" specifically, and not "lawless"? No big deal, I'm just curious.
ive thought about the same thing except i always imagined that i would find my soulmate and live the rest of our lives in a Garden of Eden. Just a dream not likely to happen. Your vision has true potential and im totally down. Also i loved the movie The Beach i saw it 3 times at the theaters.
What exactly does "getting something done" mean really? And why do we need any sort of administration? Let's take the example of a university. You would think the most important asset of the university is the faculty and teachers, yet it's the administrators, the folks that keep the records. The folks who force so called irrelevant meetings to an end, but who can say what is irrelevant? Even if we get a administration that works, chances are any head will abuse the power they get. That is the nature of human beings often when tempted with power. Systems of control cannot work, people will always find a way around it and then there is true chaos. For example gangs or cartels vs governments. Such conflicts lead to the most amount of human loss. What we can all agree on though is that the rights of each individual as an autonomous human being should be respected. For example the right to put whatever one wants in their bodies, the right to life, the right to engage in any activity with other consenting individuals, ect. And as stated before, have an horizontal arrangement with a consensus democracy instead of an hierarchal arrangement with a authoritative institution. Such a "system" of spontaneous order can work. Now then if anyone really wants to somehow make this a reality...well how would you go about doing this? PM me if anyone is actually serious in making this occur......you know Michael Oliver's "Republic of Minerva" almost became a reality.....the only difference between him and us is that he was much richer. So I guess the only obstacle in our way is money. Money for a ship to find a perhaps undiscovered island, or to buy an island and keep things low key and underground. And let's not limit ourselves to just psychedelic island paradises. I mean in countries like Brazil, Mexico, and India there are many indigenous tribes in forests that are in national parks that have rights to their entheogens and customs, I don't see why they couldn't let us be an independent tribe in such a way as well; as long as we are not harming anyone's rights.
pedaltopedal, it all depends on whether or not you want it. The idea of the island is most things would be natural and self-made, and there would be no rules against having electricity and internet of course. However if we decide to do so it would be ideal for the island to come up with an electricity source that was self sufficient in design. I actually wonder whether we can use the cannabis plant in some way to do this, since hemp can already be used to create fuel for vehicles if it was ever decided to have them on the island. Awesome Cast Away pic Asmodean, discover only we could find such an island. Yeah the only reason to advertise it once discovered (in some low tech way in the same manner is in hopes someone would bring a lighter, lol).
I think for a small islandcommunity windenergy is a better option than burning hemp for producing energy.
I bet Donald Trump would be down. If the people involved are willing to risk life and limb to protect the place I am sure they would be capable of not killing each other over power and transport and labor. Its like living on a farm, you just know that your day will be filled with work, talk, cultivation and taking a trip when you feel like it. What is so hard about being civil? Cast away the weak links, big deal.
ima stay active on the post to see if this ever goes down in my lifetime haha. Sign me up, ill bring the munchies! forget fruitss
heh looks like everyone would like to see this but people arent perfect.. im sure some things would go wrong.. and if such an island did exist.. do you know how many people would want to live there?? and these days, you cant just trust everyone like it use to be.. and food, would we harvest meat from animals? i cant see this ever happening without alot of conflict. also if it was that secluded, we would need a hospital/source of medicine rather, with real doctors.. lol wouldnt be a good idea if the doctors were tripping too
what! wheres the fun in that. i enjoy the hunt its much more gratifying when youve worked hard searching for what you need
Yeah dude, if it's gonna be a drug paradise, we need freedom (isn't that the whole reaosn why we would need to make our own island), and that extends to food too. We bring some livestock for meat, but don't force the vegetarians to eat the meat. That I don't think would be too hard, it would probably be worse trying to get the veggies to let us eat what we want. The Mushroom Man
