I would have to agree that the incidents cited were horrible and that neither offender got even a portion of what should have been dealt out. I would also agree that in a court of law the female is often favored. Both because of the biases that IronGoth points out and because it costs a lot more to house female prisoners. However, the situation on the scene often totally reverses. Many police feel that most times the female "had it coming" or "asked for it" I have even heard female officers say " Hell if she would not leave she at least could have defended her self" As a complete aside it was a pretty piss-poor ER that the male in the first case went to, you would not believe how routine ungluing people is in an ER.
Hey, and if you're a woman you can KICK someone to death over a parking space. OK OK OK so she did get four years (less with parole, good behaviour etc) but that was after an appeal and all kinds of attempts to get real justice. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4406460.stm
Just because some psycho woman did that doesn't mean "woman can KICK someone to death over a parking space." And IMO, she should have gotten worse than just four years. Look, people are scum bags. Men and women are assholes. Laws are screwed up. Convicted child molesters are roaming our towns, not locked up away from their prey. It's not about men v. women. It's about good people v. bad people.
lol. neither of them were ugly. they were a upper middle class yuppie couple. but this was in teh aftermath of OJ and the cops were coming down super hard on domestic violence. a "no tolerance" approach. i thought it was great. they both looked so stupid and sheepish.
Goth, if I tried I bet I could find plenty of cases where men got a far less sentance than what was deserved... In fact, I have one that hits home. My step-sister's father was molesting her for 5 years and admitted guilt to it. He got 9 months jail time.
That's disgusting. But mind you, I was not only aware of this kind of thing but fought against it. I actually ended up supporting a bill that became law that eliminated the "incest exemption" Under the OLD law if you raped a stranger you went to jail, but if it was a family member the MAXIMUM the judge could sentence you to was probation. You got credit for growing your own victim. That is wrong - but then again, I fought hard against this. I am also fighting hard for DV against males to not be trivialised.
Women aren't evil, well most, but they are irritating & ignorant but most men know this, of course we keep it to our self's. I'm teasing, I'm teasing... Or am I?
I blame all aspects of this on the Duluth Model. I doubt most people on here are familiar with it, but it has an aweful lot to do with the laws in place regarding domestic violence. Basically it was created by a small group of activists in the domestic violence against women's movement, and check out some of the philosophy here: The tactics used by batterers reflect the tactics used by many groups or individuals in positions of power. Each of the tactics depicted on the Power and Control Wheel are typical of behaviors used by groups of people who dominate others. They are the tactics employed to sustain racism, ageism, classism, heterosexism, anti-Semitism, and many other forms of group domination. Men in particular are taught these tactics in both their families of origin and through their experiences in a culture that teaches men to dominate. ...We use gender-specific terms not only because the curriculum is for men who batter, but because battering is not a gender-neutral issue. That, people, is bullshit. Every study done on domestic violence proves it wrong. My favorite fact: 1.3 million women, and 850,000 men are victims of domestic violence a year, and of both those populations, twice as many men are attacked by an armed female (this data comes from the National Institute of Health, btw). Whoever said that DV is the number one cause of death to women in their state, I'd sincerely like to see where that information comes from, because so far as I'm aware, that's one of the biggest myths adding to the problems with DV (again, from the NIH). Also, in half the states, the police are required by law to make an arrest on a domestic disturbance call. I've seen a friend go to jail because his girlfriend was yelling at their cat, which scratched her. He's still on probation. The prosecuter didn't believe her, and continued with pressing charges. That's just fucked up.
That's disgusting! Men should be protected as much as women. But it's a society thing. Society sucks...and so do all the stereotypes that go with it...
