there's probably some scene in dragon ball-z where the whole planet implodes from all of them trying to be in close to the same place.

It seems to have become interchangeable but most often calling someone PC is done for slightly different reasons than just acknowledging they're being civil :p To me the term PC applies to people in politics who actually have a use for the term and on which it originally and still in the best way is applied (imo). If I call a post of you PC there is a big chance I find you are covering up an unwanted or confronting truth or issue by putting it in an overly correct way, not just to be civil or polite.

I think it's fine if someone wants to not offend anyone. I suppose you could call it PC if someone does that.

The biggest problem comes when people retaliate against someone because they have said or done something that offends a certain set of (usually liberal) sensabilities. I don't think that people should get fired from their jobs, or be forced to make public apologies because they have used offensive words, or supported offensive political causes, but things like that happen. It's gone to the point where secret recordings of people's phone conversations are made, and if there is offensive content found, it becomes a media issue and they are forced to make concessions.

It's the climate of fear and retaliation that I object to.

i do actually remembe one time, oh, several years ago, having a very vivid, totally real dream, tactile, ofactry, could read the menues, computer screens, your face in the miror, everything, where we had all teleported to this little cafe somewhere in amsterdam. that turned out to mostly a pizza joint actually, though the pizza kitchen was shut down by the time i got there. the coffee was great, and a certain leafy green substance everyone seemed to be smoking was still available at the counter.

(i also discovered a local model railroad club had a layout and meeting room in a back room of the same place, which i enjoyed exploring that no one else seemed all that interested in)

i was actually worried about how i was going to get back home (across an ocean and a contenent), being consciously aware of having no idea HOW i had gotten THERE.

as it turned out, one the local hip forumers had a good sized house elsewere in the city, by now it was dark outside, and inveted everyone to crash on their floor. they even offered to drive those of us who had somehow arrived with their own means of transportation. i'm sure the light rail was still running and i would have loved to have seen and ridden it in the day time, but i'm sure i would have gotten lost and never found the place, and besides, they offered.

getting home turned out not to be a problem. once i was able to fall asleep on their floor, i woke up back at home in my own bed.

before i did though, there was more conversation, herb, and mocha, and in one of the two large rooms, people were watching cartoons i'd never seen before nor since, on tv.
i grabed the blanket i was given and curled up in the other room.

We would be reminded of how we are all human beings with real feelings and real emotions.

It would be an interesting social experiment, to say the least.

I was going to say that it might be fun, until I read BBAD's post on the first page, so I guess I would just avoid him/fear for my life.

I think that I would like going to a face-to-face HF gathering some day. In a way, it would be weird to have all of this contact with people online for years and never actually see anyone.

I would probably not tell anyone my user name though. If you didn't get along with someone face-to-face, it might kind of fuck up how you related to them in person.
