Well, I found out why he did that. Apparently the only way to get to animal control is by an extension through the police department. He called so early in the morning that the guy wasn't in yet, lol. So he left the description with the receptionist and she promised to get it to him as soon as he came in. We put fliers up at the local Hannaford where everyone goes for their groceries, so I feel a little better about that. At least now people beyond our street will see it. It beats going door-to-door, which we have done already on our own street.
yep..grocery store is the best idea and if you have any of those kids in the neighborhood that are always outside make sure you let them know youre looking...even offer the kids some cash lol...get them looking
Oh trust me, the reward is on the poster, lol. That's a good idea. We have some neighbors with boys that ride up and down the street on their bikes all day. I think we got their parents yesterday. It's weird, the last cat that disappeared was an old sick thing three years ago, and it's been longer than that since the last coyotes were seen... I just don't understand what could have happened. It's really the element of the unknown that's the worst. If she was dead (God forbid), I could mourn and try and move on, but this is just maddening, wondering what else I could be doing, feeling hopeful and heavy-hearted simultaneously every time I pull into my driveway... Nothing I can do but keep myself busy with other things, but then I feel guilty because I feel like I should be out looking. Erg, make it stop. :banghead:
Ooh Poop I was hoping for news of a Neffi finding and reunion. Try and stay strong Firefly, and hopefully today will be the day she comes home.
Keenman, not yet, but the full moon and the eclipse are over now, so maybe she'll quit joyriding and make her way back. Nateman, we've got an old lab retriever mix named Oreo. She has been wonderful moral support.
This is probably crazy b/c I know dogs have to be trained to "search"...but have y'all tried taking out Oreo and saying Neffi's name and see if she were to lead you anywhere? I'm sure she is aware kitty isn't there and missing her, too.
Truth. However she is fixed. We have been going out in the woods for a few hours every day this week and though there are no signs of predators or a scuffle, we did find plenty of kitty tracks. Hopefully she is one of those sets of pawprints. I saw at least one that would fit her slender little paw size... We've got fliers up with everyone we can think of now. Maybe we'll give one more to the farm the next road over. I guess I need to relax and let whatever happens happen? Kills me to say that but I'm no kind of tracker... We got lost in the woods several times... Or at least I did. One cool thing happened, though. Just before we turned back, a bright green, iridescent damselfly with black wings landed on my hand. Then a second one came, identical to the first. At one point, there were two perched on me and two fluttering around me. Then they all took off. They fluttered around both of us for a time, but eventually we had to give up and turn back. It's just too damn hot today. That was a pretty cool experience, though, and I wonder if it means anything...
Oreo is a good girl, but she wasn't too invested in what happens to Neffi. I think everyone has been telling Oreo to find the cat all week, and she has given us the equivalent of a shrug and rolling over and going back to sleep. But then again, she's like a million years old... What we did do was sprinkle old kitty litter around the property and near the stream out in the woods where we found fresh little kitty prints. I heard about it on a lost cat website based in NH. Supposedly it worked for someone, along with putting some articles of clothing outside with the person's smell on it. There's already food out there... We're getting some plastic sleeves tomorrow to put the rest of our fliers in so that we can post them up around the neighborhood for the people we missed. From all the stories I've heard, posters posters posters are the way to go... Thinking about an ad in the paper for the anti-Craigslist/internet crowd, too.
How far away did you move? Maybe she went back for some reason. Do you know anyone back there that could look for her?
I sure hope not. We moved 500 miles away, from central NY to southern Maine. The car ride was kind of traumatic for her, and it was 2 weeks before we were comfortable letting her outside. Even with us, she would tweak a bit. But that was a few weeks ago since we started letting her out on her own, and she was always very regular about coming when called and coming in at night... Until that one night... When she snuck out and didn't come back before we went to bed. If she tried to head back to NY, I wouldn't have the first clue where to look for her.
Adopted from where? From: Top 10 Distances Travelled By Lost Cats To Return Home: http://www.petmedsonline.org/record-distances-travelled-by-lost-cats.html Just sharing a thought that entered my mind today. I hope you find her!
Very interesting article! And she was born on our property. Noticed a new face at feeding time one night and she was just too cute to turn away. We joke that she domesticated herself, but it did take a while to get her comfortable with us. Once she was, she became the best cat I've ever had- very affectionate and loyal and unique in so many ways... There will absolutely never be another Neffi...
It's been a week now. Did my cards two days ago and they said to expect a miracle. That's pretty much all the hope I've got to go on, while everyone on our street just tells us she's been eaten and there's no point in looking for her. Even with all of the stories about how resourceful and independent cats are? Nope, dead. Oh, okay, thanks. Jerks... It's not like I'm not willing to accept it as a possibility, but would it kill them to just bite their tongue and take the damn poster? I would never be so rude... I'm sure some are just trying to be helpful and let us know that there are predators in the woods, but some are incredibly insistent that if she's not back by now, she's dead and I'm just wasting everyone's time. Five seconds of your time. Take the damn flier. Throw it away as soon as you get in the house if you want, but don't just shit on my cause. If it didn't matter to me, I wouldn't be out here... Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. I just don't understand some people.
