Of course when you take one concept and apply it to everything that people have ever done....ever, it doesn't make sense. Though in the context of high school, it really isn't that silly at all.

You seem to keep making out what I say to be about you. It isn't.

Like I said, in the context of high school, yes I think you should finish it, as you did. You spent a term at a university, didn't like it, and decided to stop going. I dont see anything wrong with that.

I understand the purpose of a lot of the courses, make no mistake about that. I was that kid in high school who shouted, "It's teaching you logical and critical thinking skills by making you figure out lots of angles in a short period.", every time some idiot shouted, "Imma drive a truck, why I needa know geometry?".

But the truth is a more focused education on critical, interpretive, creative, and logical thinking is necessary with out so much of the forced filler. You have to realize though that the school system is not set up for that AT ALL. Sure some of the courses teach those things, but it's not a focus. What is the focus generally on?

    Be on time.
    Play nice.
    Don't make mistakes.
    Show up every day.
Do what you're told to do.

Every class regardless of subject, focuses on those main points. Sure they all vary as far as subject matter, but those 5 aspects are the most heavily pushed of all ideas throughout ones entire schooling, is it not?

Yes, it largely is what you make of it, and I have no problems with the education I received. It was well rounded from academics to home crafts, and technical skills. I slacked through what was not important to me and I focused on what was. I was one of VERY few of my friends to graduate though. And that is my way of saying it is my experience that people like me, more often than not, don't make it on the approach I took. Meaning do the minimal required and only absorbing what I wanted to.

I was just giving an example in order to see what you consider "finishing what you start" to be applicable to....the best example I could too, as it is my own life.

a lot of this sounds like every reason i ever heard for kids to quit their sports teams because they're tired of practice and "that stupid coach always telling me what to do."

Ask Secret Agent Amanda about finishing highschool. She is 364 days younger than I am, and was a grade below me. She dropped out of high school her junior year, got a national honors G.E.D(top 10% scoring in the nation), and went on to college as I was finishing high school.

A younger, high school drop out, went to college before I did. Imagine that.

    It is that silly.

If you're referring to my post, she didn't stick it out. She quit the last TWO YEARS, took a test, and was granted admission to college. She skipped the bullshit and went straight to where she felt she needed to be.

If you're not referring to my post, than just keep being sexy. You sexy thing.

It's still silly to say that because you started something you need to finish it. School, food, businesses.... it's a silly "rule" or "generalization". To say that in some instances it shows maturity is fitting, but in general. I disagree.

Grades have nothing to do with intelligence. I was a below-average student for most of my middle and high school years. It was mostly because I didn't care and thought school was a joke (which it is). I never did homework, but I almost always got A's on tests. If it wasn't for the tests, I would have been a mostly straight F student. I got mostly C's and D's in my classes.

Grades seem to be the best way within the school system they have to reflect intelligence, which is a shame. Some of the new curriculums have very flawed ways of grading a student's work in far too broad categories like Knowledge, Application, Communication, Initiative - where the students get graded on several rigid and rather arbitrary areas of work that effect the entirety of their work.

Students end up having to pass through the same hoop each and every time they go to tackle a school project, test or homework. They end up getting over-graded on colouring contests and the contents in their personal journals.

i am sexy. sexily referring to your post. she still got the GED and did very well. she just stuck it out and finished FASTER. see what i'm saying? i wish i coulda done that. i wasn't bright enough. but my last two years of school were my best. i got into all the AP and Honors courses (finally got back to that after a stint with alcoholism in the 7th grade) and aced them. my teachers were incredible.

mind you, i quit college after my AA because, frankly, i needed some real world education. it was a tough decision. i love school so much. i don't blame anyone who goes an alternate route, i just hope that they're doing it for the right reasons, not "i hate having to be on time for class and doing homework." any worthwhile acheivement in life has a slew of requirements that anyone addicted to giving up will consider a terrible onus. except for that one endeavor to be as non-existant as possible. also a valuable goal for the right person.

I'm one of those people who hates being in class on time and doing homework.

I can't believe I still get graded on those things.

well, being on time is repsectful for the time limited class and the people within it. it's aggravatingly distracting when people can't ever show up on time.

I know you hate that, but I have had problems with it and have since I was a young child. I just can't believe that I'm nearly 24 and attendance counts for 10% of my entire grade. It should be an easy 10%, but when you have other things going on in your life sometimes that 1 hour class on Friday (where we're just listening to the TA talk about how to find information from the Library) isn't worth the long trek when you have other deadlines to meet.

Dunno, I've gotten a lot better at being on time and present, but it's still something that I work hard at every day.

I do understand what you're saying now, but to me that's not "sticking it out". It's starting a marathon and taking a cab the last 4 miles. haha. I don't have any less respect for her than I would if she had finished highschool. As I said, she made it to college before I did. Basically a difference of terminology, but we obviously agree on the core point.

I agree that some people don't think things through before they quit. I'm one of those. I was too caught up in drugs, parties, and life as a free man to want to continue to commit my time, not only to a job, but to a second 'job' that didn't pay.

I also lucked out. The second job I landed after quitting college was a sales job. I got tricked into staying because it was ok money and really laid back. Plus they didn't care if I showed up or not. Somewhere along the line though, I grew up a bit and realized what kind of marketable skill I had acquired. I now have almost 5 years experience in the field, and would not be on the path I am now if I had not quit college and started that sales job. It changed me as a person and it introduced me to new ways of thinking and dealing with people.

I realize not everybody can be so lucky and for that reason I do not look down on college, but I also fully understand any time somebody tells me it's not for them.

So show up half the time, on time, and get 5 of the 10%. As long as everything else is A-1, you should still pull out 90% or higher and get the A.
