Comedy is certainly in trouble And it's "well meaning" people like soulcomprimise who are out to make the world a stale place.
This is an unneccesary conclusion (as usual). There's plenty of comedy doing what its supposed to do and no serious indication that will change. You're letting yourself get scared again (or charging your statement) Its not an issue that people like Soulcompromise are out there and neither that their peculiar conclusions get heard (same with yours I would say).
Pretty soon there will be fuck all to laugh about except perhaps our selves ! And you can get locked up for that !
Comedy is supposed to push the boundaries of acceptable behavior. When we start policing what is supposed to be acceptable in comedy, it dries up and becomes stale. There’s certain genres of comedy some people enjoy that I don’t find funny, but it’s not my place to say it should be censored.
Is a cartoon the place to go for an accurate world view? While I agree with what you're saying--the need for adequate representation--I don't feel it's the Simpsons' responsibility to do that. That's why diversity is important: so that we can see accurate representations of other peoples and groups in our day-to-day lives.
It's not so much that it needs to be accurate for people's worldview. It just needs to be accurate about Indian people so that our worldview isn't racist. Because we accept a lot of what we see through the medium of television as fact or our reality. I think it's really hard to separate the facts from the fallacies when you have a character like Apu who is the embodiment of many many stereotypes. Granted, they have tried to incorporate his religion and family in a lean away from cultural appropriation, but honestly I think for someone like me, I'd rather have a non-stereotypical Apu.
Blah. Comedy is the last bastion of free speech. If people don't think something is funny, don't watch. Good comedy is irreverent. Offensive even. If it's upsetting you and making others laugh there's a good chance it's doing its job.
What's wrong with owning a convenience store anyways, i dont really see that as a negative stereotype. My boyfriend and I got to know a really cool Indian couple who owned a gas station by where we used to live because we were in there all the time. They drove a Mercedes and put their kids through college by owning a gas station. A lot of Indians DO own convenience stores, almost all of them around here except the chains are Indian owned, but I dont see why being a small business owner would be looked at as a negative stereotype anyways
I love the guys that work at the 7 11 near me. They're always really nice to me and we chat n joke around quite often.
It’s not decades. There have been lynchings in the last 10 years. The LGBQT community is still fighting for equal rights. Women make 75 cents on the dollar compared to men - and it’s worse for black and Latino women. You see with the Nasser and Weinstein cases that outright criminal abuse of women was tolerated as recently as last year. Hate crimes are at record highs.
If they aren't like that how is is it very stereotypical? If it wasn't true then why would anyone complain or think it' funny?
Only fascists want free speech and stereotypes in comedy. I’m actually amazed at the number of sitcom characters who I can call racist these days.
Are American Indians, Native Americans or Indian Americans?? Political correctness is starting to get confusing
when i was in a bowling league a few years ago, there was a black guy in the league who would shout at the top of his lungs "black on black crime" every time he got a strike. i still have no idea what he meant by it, but i feel like whatever it was it was probably a little racist.
Stereotyping is the slap in the face to political correctness. Political correctness is like the guy who never gets jokes, because he's too uptight and serious about everything.
