But they (our military and all those private contractors) are heros! That's what we've been fed. I am not hungry enough to eat it anymore.
I usually like a bit of cheese with my pie but in this case I think it's redundant. Heroes for whom? Big oil CEOs? OPEC? The world is being destabilized and all Americans are inheriting a universal hatred because of what's being done. Why can't a plump intern give him a blow job so we can impeach him (Bush)?
For the same reason Clinton wasn't convicted, it's not in the best interests of the political powers.
It's not a republican or democrat thing it's corporate through and through. And each party is benefitting. The only one losing out is the working man who sends his sons and daughters off to fight for the new crusade.
I agree with this. Too bad we couldn't knock out cable and TV sateliltes so people would have no choice but to pay attention. Corporate America is well on its way to taking over every aspect of our lives. The banking industry baited prospective homeowners with sub-prime mortgages then cranked up interest rates to churn out an new generation of people financially desperate enough to consider the military a viable way to support themselves or finance an education. They'll get their education all right.
I hope they don't join up thinking they will receive the GI bill, chances are they won't. Like many of my friends during Vietnam. http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/3134/gi_bill_fails_vets/ What a recruiter promises you doesn't always hold up in court.
Classic bait and switch. Edit... Okay, I read the link and it's less bait and switch and more using needless bureaucracy to systematically renege on what is promised. In any case it's a way of duping the uninformed into getting shot at by folks who have been well-taught to despise everything our country stands for.
Maybe the amount of interest in the military is an indicator of the ignorance level in the country, sort of like a thermometer measures the temp. I really don't know how you stop the ignorance if PARENTS and SCHOOLS don't step in STRONGLY. And even THAT is no guarantee. Too many young folks just want to show the world how big their dicks are. I am thinking that there is something sorely lacking in our society that makes our kids not give a damn about anything except "proving" themselves. And it's not TV or being spoiled with THINGS or any of that. I'm pretty sure it's the ABSENCE of all things TRIBAL. Adulthood ceremonies, tribal closeness, family ties, community ties, honor of elders; these are things lacking. These are things that make people selfish. And selfish is what causes wars and warriors.
I know some people who have joined who have very high I.Q.'s and were offered scholarships before they joined. They had a desire to do something they felt was right for them. As for recruiters, if you believe what they say then you deserve what you get. They are salesman just like job recruiters, truck driver recruiters ect, they are there to sell you a line of shit to persuade you. I dont think joining is stupid if you enter it informed. If you join expect that you might have to fight and die, that you have to listen to orders even if you hate them. If you dont go in with that in mind then joining was not stupid you were. The law enforcement field is getting just as bad. People who sign up for the job then whine and cry becuase they are actually having to deal with crimminals who shoot at them. Duh! Yow swore in to enforce laws, to fight crime ect what did you think that badge made everyone drop to there knees for ya?
whenever i think of the local politician ,rowdy elements that always do bad for the country i think why should i join military and fight for these idiots and defend their freedoms its better to live your own life and not to fight for all the morons back in country
I'm retired from the military. When I came out, it was hard to find a job (you can't live on a military retirement). My skills were hard to translate over to civilian jobs. I have, however, been able to prove myself to civilian employers and have since done well for myself. Would I go in today? Interesting, I passed an Army recruiting office in the mall the other day and joked to the recruiters out front that I'd go back in but only if I could go to Afghanistan (only legitimate war of the 2, IMHO). I think it's important for people to continue to join the military. We must have a defensive force to protect us and our friends against our would be enemies. But, I think it's a disgrace that politicians have started and perpetuated wars that we should have never been in (read Iraq). So, I guess I have mixed feelings about it. I certainly would understand if a person wouldn't want to go in because they don't believe in the war(s) we're fighting (funny, in the 60s I didn't feel that way).
stupid stupid stupid stupid!! I know at a lot of high schools they recruit, telling yo they'll pay for school etc. BS. Its a death sentence. i dated a marine once; wow, brainwashed.
Wow, you read my mind completely! On everything, but esp. on the part about the absence of tribal things. I have thought about that for a long time.
Its up to the individual if its a good idea or not but be ready to go to war. My friend joined the National Guard to improve his future and not go to Iraq but they sent him any way.
Its not a good idea to get involved with that kind of shit. Joining any kind of military is never a good idea. you're just throwing your life away.

This is why many people strive to find happiness by means of power or pleasure; both ways are dangerous; both paths lead to nowhere; both paths lead to destruction of life and of soul.
sad to see so many people so ignorant of the military. Each branch of the military offers something different. There are many jobs in the military that don't involve kill or be killed. Since I served 8 years in the Navy I'll restrict my examples to only the Navy. Just because one served in the military doesn't mean he or she knows all about the military. With the exception of a hospital corpsman (Marine medic), SeaBees (combat construction crew), and SEALS, the rest of the Navy jobs are pretty much restricted to ship or shore duty away from combat. I worked in the engineroom of a steam driven ship (Machinist Mate). I had to learn how to operate electric generators, convert sea water to drinking water, oil purification, and many other technical task. Everyone on a ship learns how to fight fires. The job fields on a ship vary greatly. There are cooks, laundry operators, ship's store, barber, computer programing/repair, electrician, welders, plumbers, machinist (they can make a tool or part from a block of steel), weather forecasters, aviation mechanics, journalist, nuclear engineer, and a whole host of other jobs. If you join the Navy not knowing exactly what you want to do then you could end up with a crappy job. If you get orders for the job you want along with the school for that job then you're pretty much set for that job. Each branch of the military is different and offer different jobs. I did enjoy climbing the Rock of Gibralter, going inside the Pyramid of Egypt, standing next to the Sphinx, traveling the canals of Venice, sunning on the beaches of Monte Carlo, visiting the holy cities of Bethleham and Jerusalem, seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and walking the streets of Barcelona. I didn't enjoy visiting muslim countries nor the hard work it took to get to those places.
Thing is when you take the oath of enlistment you can't elect not to kill or go where you don't want to. From the moment you take the oath you are owned much like a cheap hooker owes you an hour for you money.
