We all know why there is a divide here. SE has offended and upset numerous people on this forum with his elitist, know-all additude. We are also tired of his mis-information that he keeps putting out there. Some of us more vocal members have been speaking up about it. It's pretty simple really. Yes, SE has some valuable information to share, but he needs to stick to topics that he has experience/knowledge on and stop ranting about every topic posted. He also needs to choose his words more carefully and maybe think twice about posting jokes that insult people's religion (for example).
I have never ever said fuck rastas now have I??? There are no rastas in this debate now is there???? Nope!!!!!!!!! Im sorry you feel me to be disrespectful ...be it active or passive. I dont share your views SE...Im not sitting down with any rastas, Im not sitting down with any catholics, Im not going to eat sunday dinner with a baptist....why ......because IM NOT RELIGIOUS!!!!! I dont share thier views...end of story! What disrespects me...someone trying to shove their beliefs down my throat and tell me how awful I am for not believing it. Guess what...I CAN do what I want....and did!!! So did you yourself not disrespect christians??? So all long as I say Hey Rasta Mon its a joke...he will be cool!!! phhhhtttt
I was offended and disrespected in the very first post he made in this thread.... and he preaches of respect....funny funny
I can't believe how this has all kicked off. Dreads seem to mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Surely when a question like this is asked you could come together, keep opinions out of it and just display the facts, and THEN discuss them like adults Before this i was 100% committed to getting dreads, but more importantly i wanted to submerge myself within the culture. Pick and choice aspects of it i liked and shape it to fit me. As we all do with most things. Instead you're ripping into each other. Meh, perhaps i just thought it was a culture based more on a persons spirit, and that alone would be the common belief that held people together. Regardless of how they do the dreads. If someone shows an interest, especially on a high level than 'they look good' shouldn't that be supported? Instead most of you appear to be the same as everyone else, you just use a different rallying point. I don't know who sees their dreads as a spiritual journey, or an enrichment of the mind and soul, but from where i am standing, and from an outside view all the journeys you took are in circles, and only lead around your own beliefs. It's truly a depressing sight to watch. I wanted the enrichment and the personal growth, and now it seems like an unatable goal. I will say thanks for your input though, even if it wasn't what i was hoping for.
Mike ...you wont have these difficulties in "real life". Be who you are, be happy, and you cant go wrong....ever. Everyone has their own reasons for dreading...and ALL reasons should be respected.
when i first considered getting dreads and started researching about them, i wanted them purely for looks...i dont think there's anything wrong with that at all now i want them for more spiritual reasons, my own spiritual reasons, no one elses (though they may parallel some thoughts) now that i want more out of it than simply a cool lookin head of hair do i feel that i have a better reason? not really...deeper of course, more significant to my overall person sure...but it doesnt make my reason any better than any others ...well shit...i got distracted by the TV and forgot where i was goin with this...basically, if you want dreads, no matter what reason, it's good enough, and if anyone thinks differently kindly thank them for their opinion and move on, because that's all it will ever be, an opinion, and an opinion is worth it's weight in gold...which is to say they're worthless
qft seems to be the new trend today, so QFT! cultural appropriation is just not the issue here. there was not always this much debating here, and the debating does not have anything to do with different methods and beliefs as far as i can see. just would like a clarification here. first of all, by growing dreadlocks, am i passively disrespecting rastas or some other spiritual group? why? did they invent dreadlocks? are dreadlocks exclusive to their culture? do you really think that the cultural appropriation issue applies to dreadheads? second, i would really like to see where anyone here said anything even remotely disrespectful to rastas, any culture, any religion or the natural dreading method.
Am I passively disrespecting Rasta's when I smoke ganja too? lol ETA: What does QFT stand for? I'm ignorant...
lmao ive been reading stuff on this forum for about a week, that old hippie guy who cant spell and argues everything is absolutely hilarious
I'd just like to point out the spiritual/religious reasons for dreading hair are not necessarily one and the same as cultural. For example: the Celts are known to have dreaded their hair, as well as wear their hair in mohawks. As far as archaeologists/historians understand this, there is no apparent or yet known spiritual reason for this. It has been suggested that they wore their hair in locks, limed them til they were rock hard, and wore them into battle as an alternative to metal headwear. Nothing even remotely spiritual about that. You may wish to wear your hair in dreads to honour your Celtic roots (or protect your head against dive-bombing seagulls), but the spiritual associations you place on them are all your own. Originally there most likely weren't any. Dreadlocks and spirituality is a complex, multi-faceted beast; and like spirituality, dreads are not a one-size-fits-all affair. It would be pretty dull if they were and I for one would in no way have been drawn to them if that was the case. Each to there own. Peace
