Hamas to Stop Palestinian Elections From Taking Place in Gaza

Oct. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Hamas will bar residents of the Gaza Strip from voting in elections that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called for January, officials said.

The order issued today by the Hamas-run Interior Ministry in Gaza means that only West Bank Palestinians would be able to participate in both presidential and parliamentary elections that Abbas scheduled for Jan. 24

Hamas, a militant Islamic movement branded a terrorist group by the U.S. and European Union, seized control of Gaza in June 2007 and purged leaders of Abbas’s Fatah Party in a wave of violence.
