So what is your opinion guys or girls, what should I try or what do you know will work to get the look I want. If it's not possible then what is the closest hair style that I can get to that, maybe small braids? What can I do to help, should I post pics of my hair, or should I try a different forum, different hair cut, call more salons. I am a male if that helps with the decisions.

It is possible for you to have dreadlocks, even to have quite thin ones but they aren't going to look like you want because you are not :afro:

I just thought I'd point out... just incase there is the wild tiny off chance you really haven't done a lot of reading.... you do know it is going to take months and months (in my case a good 18 months+) before the dreadlocks would start to mature and look even remotely 'neat' or 'nice'. I might have gotten the complete wrong impression but it seems to me like you want a new hair style for right now and if that is the case then trying to get your hair to dreadlock is definately not for you. In order for you to specify how thick you want them you will need to have them done at a salon, where they will most likely back comb the hair (don't let them put wax in it). Depending on how long and thick your hair is this back combing can take many many hours and be quite expensive and all the time it's being done involves someone pulling quite hard on your hair and head which isn't usually considered pleasurable....well unless hair pulling is your thing YMMV.

Aaaanyway after the many hours of hair pulling pain that you've paid for you will end up with hair that vaugely resembles dreadlocks (if you squint and it's dark). Then for the next year to two years you have to put up with them looking very fat and short and messy - backcombing results and squished up fat dreadlocks even if you want them to be thin they will start off fat just because of the backcombing and will take a long time to get thinner. Even if you have hair half way down your back the dreadlocks you get will probably only just touch your shoulders (and obviously be shorter if you start with less hair than that) because initially dreadlocks shrink and it can be a good year before you start to see them gain length again. Oh and there will be alot of loose hair both around the dreadlocks and lots of loose hair between where the dreadlock starts and where the hair meets your scalp.

The above 'problems' will melt away after like 18 months when the dreadlocks mature. My intention is not to scare you away from dreadlocks but I want to make sure you are fully informed about them before you start on something you aren't commited to. Since you already asked about braids or alternatives I'm not sure that this will be for you.

If you set out with quite a specific look in mind for your hair then you should prepare for dissappointment. The dreadlocks will grow the way they want to and since the whole point of dreadlocks is that it's what happens to your hair if you do nothing to it..... trying to affect the way they develop by....doing things to them..... is counter productive.

I think you could get your hair crocheted if you have enough of it and then you could get almost instant results and get them the thickness you want. But I'm under the impression that that is a very time consuming task and it'll probably take even long for you to find someone who can do it for you. I'm also not sure of what will happen to the hair long term if you do that, as in I think as the hair grows out you'll have keep going back and getting it re-crocheted and also as you get loose hair it will need to be re-crocheted. But yes I believe this method would probably work for you if you want them neater, quicker and thinner. But I don't think such dreadlocks will mature and lock up by themselves, you'll need to keep paying someone to do it and the hair I have seen done in this method tends to look very manufactured and a lot like synthetic dreadlocks. Also the hair still won't be curly like in the picture you posted, I would imagine quite the opposite as crocheting the hair tightly would result in reasonably stiff straight hair.
