@UA This isnt SARS. You want to suggest the outcome of one outbreak must end like the last... ? hmm.

I think the last pandemic was 1920s or sthg?
I think there's a big one, once every hundred years or so.
Altho, I don't think there were many health and safety experts in the time of Bubonic Plague...

I wonder if an uncurable pandemic would cause people to try folk medicine and ritual sacrifice to the JuJu Gods?

36 thousand people in the US die yearly from flu related deaths every year...

swine flu is just one more possibility in this factor. i wonder how many people have died from non swine flu related flu illnesses since this has been reported on.

No, I am not a doctor. So I have no way of knowing.

But getting swine flu is not automatic death.

Again it is tragic for anyone to die.

I can only tell you what I have seen in the past. The media has a way of blowing things out of proportion.

i think its funny every time some new thing comes up we all run and panic like we are all gonna die...so fucking what there is a new type of flu...there are already thousands of varieties that exist and people die from them...not all people get the flu and not all that get it die...even if this is one of the rare cases where some sort of deadly world wide epedemic happens im not gonna sit in my house with a mask over my face terrified...chances are that its not as big of a deal as the media makes it out to be and im just gonna keep on doing what i always do (just like i did during the last times some terrifying new disease apperared...and i am still living so seemes to have worked out ok)and if something happens i will worry about it then

It's hype and we won't know if it's justified or not for a while.

This isn't near as bad of an outbreak though... only the weak (children, elderly) really need to worry about this.

Even if it spreads, most of us will simply get the flu and get over it.

There could be some good in this, might help eradicate those damn baby boomers out faster. Save social security and encourage more social liberalism.

    I support the swine flu.

Well, the media takes advantage of anything they can to create fear, so I would say a lot of this IS fearmongering and hype. However, the virus itself is very strange because it is basically the human flu, the bird flu and the swine flu rolled into one. The question is how will the government exploit this incident to gain even more control. Any situation like this plays to the government's advantage, and people panicking is just what they want.

I'm too lazy to type new shit, so this is a copy and paste of myself from another forum and some shit might seem not to make sense, but in general it should on why it probably won't be a big thing, but it could be a big thing

People think this but it really is a true analogy. The flu effected first world countries at the time as bad as it effected the colonial world. Remember you can't cure influenza, you can only lessen the symptoms. Immune system or not it doesn't make a difference, what made the spanish flu along with the avian flu and along with this flu is the unusually high mortality rate in which it kills people and the quickness it does it, normally within the first few days. All of the current cases if this swine flu have only been in developed countries and all the deaths have been in Mexico, and Mexico is not as poor and destitute as we like to think on this side of the border, they have a standard of living at about the same as Eastern Europe and most of the deaths have been in Mexico city, which is a modern, rich metropolis with great health care facilities.

The original case zero of this flu is thought to be a child in the Veracruz state from a small town that had industrial size pig farms. The second though is thought to be a woman from a whole state over who was a middle class government official who worked in a modern office building and lived in a nice suburb and it's good to guess other officials who came into contact with her took it back Mexico city. Influenza makes no discrimination.

Say it did turn into a pandemic, and 25% of the United States came down with the flu over say 10 months, and say it had a mortality rate of about 2% as it more or less does in Mexico right now(compared to the normaly .01% mortality rate the flu has, again going back onto why it's not the flu itself it's the strain), that would be 1,500,000 dead from the flu, compared to the average 35,000 that die from it in the US every year. Remember it's not the flu itself that's the problem, it's this strain of it, as it was in 1918

Dunno.I know alot of Mexico is pretty glitzy looking and "NAFTA-ized".
But get out in the country and many of em still live in shacks. Then, there's a class below that live in shit thats made out of branches.
They looked poorer than rural India to me.And thats as poor as anywhere outside Africa.

But yes, modern offices, aeroplanes and highrise living could mean flu sweeping thro prosperous places.
People aged 10 to 65 prob won't really die.
But alot of pensioners could die- instead of living to 85,they could die at 68/71/whatever.
Which in truth is sthg pretty terrible IMO.Altho some of u wont give a toss.
    Plus kids dying.

Ah, excuse me...have you ever been to Mexico city? It is clear to me you have never been there.

Modern, Rich with great health care?

Then why do the elite in Mexico city go to the USA for treatment?

Modern? Sure if you are in the gated communities with security guards.

Think it is modern? Go drink the water that comes out of the faucet. The Mexicans don't. They buy purified bottled water.

Have you been in a slum of Mexico City? You will see filthy run down shacks that have no pluming whatsoever or electricity.

There are parts of Mexico City that have open sewers in the drainage ditches.

The poverty is heartbreaking. Yes there are elite powerful people. But the vast majority do not live anywhere close to Eastern Europe,

The places I am talking about are not the areas that the tourists go. They are but a few blocks from the resorts and museums.

You will not find them in the travel brochures.

All NAFTA did is make the rich more powerful. The poor have just been victims of more exploitation.

I realize you copied and pasted this. But perhaps you need to check your facts.

BTW: I love Mexico. I love the beauty and the wonderful people. I will likely buy a house in Mexico.

i keep seeing people say this over and over, this is incorrect with this strain,

this strain is killing the HEALTHIEST,those who's immune systems are strong.

whats happening is the body is basically killing itself by producing a overdose of antibodies trying to combat the virus.

word, i was going to post about this. also, the 1918 pandemic came in 2 waves - the first being mild, the second being severe, so i think time will have to tell if this one develops in the same way...
