It's a fair question to ask why there was so much fire-power at hand before the situation on board was known about...and the level of violence that they met.
Did they know they would come under such violent attacks? I'm not sure.
Is it standard practice to send well armed commandos in every situation? I'm not sure.
These questions do not seem to be being answered, or asked for that matter.
But you say why not send in destroyers, which is a provocative thing to do.
I'd assume well armed commandos are always sent out - just in case.
It is clear every opportunity was afforded those on board to stand down and come to a peaceful arrangement. The answer is clear: they refused.
To be honest, the only question I have is: was the end result proportionate.

I'm sorry odon - but you are so full of shit!! It was no contest. The Israeli's used overpowering and unnecessary force to subdue an aide ship. If you were trying to get food and medical supplies to say - New Orleans - and armed people boarded your ship - would you resist as best you can?

It is international bullying and nothing more. They are strong and Gaza is weak and Israel will do what they damn well please. Apparently they damn well please to kill people and continue the suffering in Gaza. This push em around cause we can is a load of bull!!

Oh yeah - and many of the people on the ship where the killing took place were foreign nationals - many of which have already been sent back to their home countries. Would Israel do that if they were terrorist minded?

Israel has become a pariah of the middle east.

 

When did I use the word legitimate? The important word here is reality. If the people on the ships assumed there would be no trouble, they were living in a fantasy world. The reality is that when you mess with Israel, you generally get fucked up. They don't play around. Any adult who lives in that part of the world knows that by now, unless they are a fool.

according to the law of blockade which was derived from customary international law and codified in the 1909 Declaration of London. It was updated in 1994 in a legally recognized document called the "San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea."


Under some of the key rules, a blockade must be declared and notified to all belligerents and neutral states, access to neutral ports cannot be blocked, and an area can only be blockaded which is under enemy control.

Lol, the weapons one is such bullshit it goes to show how far Israel is trying to cover its track. Holy shit, a passenger ship with a kitchen, traveling long distances has knives and tools on it. Christ I have friends with more "weapons" then that in their basement tool boxes. Those are not weapons, any ship has knives, flares and poles on it.

There is no Israeli blockade 35 miles out to sea in international waters, the blockade it declared is in its territorial waters and land.

The only important thing that's happened now is Israel has fucked itself. It's lost what little alliance it had left with its one muslim ally(Turkey), Egypt has reopened the Rafah border crossing, and the world as a whole, including the US is raging pissed and demands for the Gaza blockade to be lifted, basically ignored till now except by aid group and Palestinian friendly nations, is now being called for from major powers.

If HAMAS declared a blockage of Tel-Aviv - that would be perfectly legal? If Canada declared a blockade of New York - that would be perfectly legal? That's the great thing about America - we can look at state murders all over the world and , what the hell, they aren't Americans - no big deal. Americans are fucked up when it comes to people from other countries - rape, murder, genocide, torture - psst - not big deal, they aren't Americans.

The flotilla wasn't invited to Israel, they tried to storm the ports after many warnings,they failed.

 

Newsflash, you can't storm a port that you're 35 miles away from unless they have some kind of Star Wars technology.

There were 35 miles away from a port in Gaza, Israel has a modern and well equipped navy, Gaza is only about 20 miles long, not hard to stop a few ships.

I said world powers, the US is not the sole world power, China, France, and Germany among them. The security council is meeting to discuss lifting the blockade, as a whole it's already urged Israel to lift the blockade. In an actual vote I'll bet $10 here and now the only nay vote is going to be the United States.

But back to the main question, if Israel wasn't trying to make some elaborate point that went horribly wrong, why didn't they just meet the ships with a few patrol craft and destroyers at their territorial waters and escort them to a port in Israel, then arrest everyone.
