It's insane to keep running these plants now let alone talk of building more. They need to be systematically shut down with priority to those in danger zones. The west coast is due for a massive quake like Japan. The poles are shifting causing more quake because earth is wider at the equator. In a couple years we're going to find out if the Asteroid Apophis could possibly hit earth in 2029 or 2036. If there is any chance then all nuclear plants on earth need to be shut down before that.

TEPCO has no idea how much radioactive fuel has melted, where it is now, how much radiation is actually being released, etc.

In other words, they know nothing, can control nothing. Things could be far worse than we know at this point.

Realize that that doesn't count radiation in water all over the plant, or still being contained one way or another, just what they can measure in the air at specific locations.

    Quote From here:
    where is the melted fuel?

You know given the amount of fuel rods stored at that site, it's not too different than a worst case scenario for any nuclear waste depository, such as that scheduled for Yucca Mountain in Nevada.

They've held off on approving that site for more than a decade (remember Martin Sheen and others protesting outside the place?) And now we see that there is no longer term storage solution that is safe. All it would take is a sizeable earthquake and all their high-tech storage is worthless.

Now no state should want to have to store more nuclear waste than it already has. And imagine all the risks of transporting it around the country. I believe this is one big reason why Germany is curtailing its nuclear program. The waste shipments were a major focus of the protests there.

UPDATE 8/4/2011: Three top Nuclear Energy regulators fired by Japan's Prime Minister. Major changes coming to nuclear bureaucracy in Japan.

It's funny how all the pro-nuke talking heads are so obviously shills for the Industry anymore. They sound so clueless when they appear, as if Fukushima never happened.
