Regardless. Nuclear power in unsustainable. It requires ever more fuel, which is one of the more deadlier elements on the planet. Even children are smart enough to understand this one.
sometimes i go off topic because its better to inject a bit of humour instead of continuing the "i know more than you know" arguments that always come up on forums it's better than calling each other children Kenny seems to be doing ok considering the troll comments that have been directed his way :biker:
I don't understand . How can they take all active nukes offline ? Without mass blackouts . The article said Japan uses 30 % nuke generated power . How can you just take them offline ? What's now taking up the 30% defualt ? Hydro/electric dams , turbines , wind ,solar or what ? It's not possible to take up this slack that soon from other generating sources . So I guess they're doing without . Which will really effect their economy . They have to have other generating power sources online now . Coal fired , or gas taking up the slack somewhat . 30% is a pretty huge number to make up. Their energy prices have to be going through the roof . And the second article is some scary shit . Is it possible this meltdown is this dangerous to all earth populations ? And their downplaying how critical the situation is ?
What they would do is to power or spin the dynamos (Electrical Generators) by bringing in large diesel engines and hooking those up to drive the dynamos. Pretty straight foreward.
The big problem in Japan is that now a large portion of their country is unusable. That whole area. Oh, and so many people have been poisoned.
So...what is their power plans for the future? Solar panel every roof? maybe they will come up with a way to store electricity for during the off times..
Shit, I wish we'd do the same thing with Diablo Canyon. People are so arrogant and tend to think the same thing could never possibly happen to them.

Wasn't it Jane Fonda in that movie which set the government into an alarm of panic.. "The China Syndrome". Hollywood!
Japan is rich in natural energy: wind, tides, geothermal (one of the best sites on earth), solar, biofuels. And green design will help them make better use of all these various forms of energy. The country now has the motivation to make the transition to sustainable clean energy and they have the technical know-how and cash reserves to build green energy systems.
In the end though... How much impact will clean energy have on an island that will probably now one day produce a real Godzilla?
hopefully these nuclear reactors are only back online long enough for them to build their geothermal stuff. then do away with it
Dude, there's always going to be people protesting every possible decision you could make. I think the country could not keep the cities lit without these reactors, so I would suppose most people are grudgingly putting up with it, until they can phase in other forms of energy. But if I had to choose between another meltdown and massive blackouts and power grid failures, I would go with the blackouts. It would be one hell of a disaster without power in huge areas of the country, but that beats radiation killing thousands and sickening millions. So if the power company is willing to risk firing up those nuclear reactors again, they better be real sure that they will last accident-free a few years until non-nuclear power plants can come on-line. Japan can't afford to lose more farmland or places for their people to live.
