Hm, the Dalai Lama is understood to be the earthly incarnation of Avalokitesvara.. the bodhisattva that is the manifestation of the wisdom, compassion, etc of all who have reached buddhahood.. in Tibet he's known as Chenrezig and is considered a deity, mixing various Vedic stuff and Bon shamanism..
