A strange comparisson. One a guitar virtuoso, one a singer. Both were the 'new' stars of Monterrey in '67, and speaking as a guitarist, myself, there has been no one to touch Jimi Hendrix.......in ALL this time!

BUT, equally, there has been no female performer to get even close to Janis Joplin. Ironically, it is actually male rock singers who - often unknowingly - copy her stage and vocal style far more than female singers. Robert Plant has never acknowledged Janis Joplin as an influence but to watch him and listen to some of his wails.....it is classic Janis.
She was an absolute natural powerhouse performer on stage, incredibly radical and raw and there was nothing around to touch her, AND she was one of the greatest blues singers of all time.....bar none.

Both knew each other from the scene at the time, and both respected the other. Jimi couldn't sing too well, but he was the greatest guitar player at the time, and - to many - still hasn't been bettered. Janis couldn't play guitar that well, but she had a voice that was the equal of Hendrix's instrument, and was probably more at home than Jimi on stage.

It is only with the passing of time, that we can REALLY see just how magnificent they both were. Jimi, has always been recognised as a true great since his death, but it is only recently that Janis is - belatedly - getting the recognition she deserves as one of the all time greats.

What about Zappa or Belew?... I think if you'd cross those two with Buddy Guy or Johnny Winter, you'd have your Jimi.

Theres no comparison. Janis Joplin...God, I can't stand her voice. I used to like it, but then, one day when I was watching Woodstock, I realized how badly she sucked. The rest of the band was good, though.

Now, Jimi on the other hand...he's a god.

How can you compare Janis to Jimi? Janis was a vocalist, Jimi a guitarist. I like them both though.
