In some ways, it measures how deliberate they are. I don't think Hendrix was a virtuoso; there were a lot of things he could not pull off... Now, Andres Segovia? Yeah. Total worship. Or even Robert Fripp.
The thing about Hendrix is he was also a great songwriter. Not everyone can combine the two as well as him.He was also a cool vocal stylist. And then there's the natty threads and lovely personality.
EXACTLY!! The thing with Hendrix, perhaps more than anything, was his originality and overall creativity. Some of these other, newer guitarists might be technically "better," but the music they make is boring cookie cutter shit which doesn't even compare to the stuff Jimi put out. Who cares how well someone can play the guitar if that's all they've got?
Jimi has a particular skill dropped turning which makes the instrument a little easier to play. dropping the tuning is making a deal with the devil < because the devil made him do it.. SRV also died an early age. making deals with the devil dropping the tuning making the guitar easier to play and fooling those that have listened to standard. Wow hes such a great guitar player. Meanwhile there is very little tension on the strings, and the amp and effects are doing all the work. Jimi had long fingers which made it easy to fake it. Buckethead is a great player too, but given some times listening to him. hes playing some the same chords, progressions sweet picking with different tones, effects, and backing only changing it up a little. Just makes it sound a little different but its the same.. he also has large fingers.. There some aussie dudes drunk on fosters, arguing whether Angus Young was the greatest guitar player..
I agree with Pressed Rat and Fairlight. He epitomized the era, believed in peace and was very humble, unlike many rock stars today. He was a perfectionist in the studio, I believe. and he also played keyboard on several of his songs. Here's a few quotes from Wikipedia:

I wasn't ever impressed with Hendrix's songwriting skills. Forgettable; his best work was a cover of a Bob Dylan tune. There are many talented guitarists. Then there are crowd favorites. Learning to tell the difference is a huge bonus.
Jimi's best tune was not All along the Watchtower, but If 6 was 9, a very UNDERrated tune indeed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW6jgLa63VA"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW6jgLa63VA
His best work remains to be subjective, you guys are just posting your favourites Yes, you may call me captain obvious.
If it ain't If 6 was 9, it can't be All along the watchtower either...is that better or not? Or are we looking at the hair in the egg
Anyway, getting back to topic here: All along the watchtower is overly overrated, while If 6 was 9 is overly underrated, hehehehehhehehehehehehehhehehehe....play with THIS!!!
Jimi Hendrix was maybe not the technical virtuoso that some guitarists are, bit if you really care about music rather than simply showing off then that does not matter. The fact is he changed the game. A Stratocaster had NEVER sounded like that before, or since. Robin Trower gave it his best shot but, meh... His style of playing is so fluid and rich. You can instantly recognize both hs sound and his style, and I honestly cannot think of another guitarist who is so distinctive. Maybe David Gilmore?
There's no such thing as "best guitar player", hendrix couldn't play complicate jazz licks like pat metheny can, but he had his own style (you can tell it's hendrix playing as he begins playing in any song), you cannot compare him to all the people who've ever played guitar and tell who's "the best" because it can't be all about technique or style or feeling. I like hendrix a lot, i like pat metheny too, i also like very much the way syd barrett played guitar, especially in his solo albums even though it's not a very 'technical' playing, i also enjoy derek bailey's unique (and very weird) style. I think such a question has very little, if any, interest. (I guess others already said what i just said, but I didn't want to read the whole topic ^^) edit : offset : "if 6 was 9" is one of my favourite too, great one
