When I was in New York a few years back,I made a point of visiting 'Strawberry Fields' in Central Park.I went over to the Dakota Building nearby & asked the concierge where John Lennon was shot?."Right here" he said & pointed down at the cobbled entrance.It was sad to know really.In a strange sort of way 'rock'n'roll' itself died in that hail of bullets in 1980 because J-L was the very last of the mega-famous rock'n'roll anti-heroes.
What happened to Lennon was a tragedy and a huge loss to his family, friends, and the entire world frankly. It's tragic whenever a father is taken from his family, especially when that family is young like John's was at the time.Sure his death was an emmense loss to the music world as well, but that pales in comparison to the loss felt by his family and friends.

I was at the annual spontanious gathering at the imagine circle in Central Park on John's birthday with my fiancee. Lots of people were there playing guitars and tamborines and singing all kinds of Beetles songs. It was very nice and I had a good time. We put one white rose on the circle which everyone was gathered around. Happy Birthday once more John.
