haha last time he pushed it like 7 years, now hes going on months cause he knows he'll croak by then haha
I think that these people keep getting the serious attention they do, says more about the general populace then it does about them... They are just trying to get whatever fame and power (according to their measures) they can to boost their ego, nothing out of the ordinary or odd there. If people will suck it up, there will be those to offer it. The people who beleive them... seriously... what in the fuck is wrong with them? lol
Can't believe someone hasn't asked him if he'll finally give up if we're all still alive after october.
You know... there is a pretty quick way to stop all these guys in their tracks... Everyone who was caught for a crime on saturday, everyone who quit their job, sold (or gave away) their stuff, should sue him. The reason you always see disclaimers on tv shows and sites that say things like "don't try this at home" or "this is for entertainment purposes" is to keep people from doing the same thing they see, hurting themself and then suing the tv station or its affiliates for 'encouraging' that behavior... They can point to the disclaimer and say, we told them it wasn't real... Well, Camping never made any such disclaimers, in fact, he worked very hard to convince people that he knew what he was talking about, and was presenting 'the end' as the word of God that everyone MUST follow or be damned... Anything that anyone did on saturday that is illegal, wrong or just plain stupid, can be laid right at his feet (assuming the people haven't been publicly claiming he is a fraudulent putz). After all, this 'Man of God' said that the world was going to end. "I really wanted to rob a bank before the end came, not for the money, but for the experience, and he convinced me that this was my last chance to do it."
You know yourself, Tom, that there are just any number of idiots/sheeple/whatever you want to call them that are just dying for the next "date"...or whomever to TELL them what to do, when to do it and when IT is going to come! As so so many have pointed out in this thread, even the angels in heaven do not know the date...and No man will ever know. Yet so-called Christians follow right on that band wagon. I don't if they can't read, don't want to, or what...
I would say robbing a bank because some nutcase said the world was going to end is crazier than predicting the apocalypse. We need to have some responsibility, and if something like this is going to happen at least let us use it to reinforce that you shouldn't listen to anyone else, rather than taking reckless actions because someone else told you something.
I did. What is sueing him going to achieve other than putting the responsibility of a bunch of morons on to another moron?
Well no insight gained 3rd time either so I can officially say I don't get what you mean, and it's clear you're not going to explain it to me.
The FIRST line of the post; Hmm, I wonder what I think it would accomplish to do what I suggested... The WHOLE post is about that very specific thing... a way to stop these types of people from spewing thier bullshit by holding them responsible for their words and the reactions they cause. I am sorry I didn't explain it better the first time you asked for clarification... I had enough faith in you that I thought you would realize that the post started with the answer to the question you asked... No worries, I have now downgraded my opinion of you and will no longer assume that simple, straight forward english will be clear to you.
I understood fully what the post was about, and your explanation is consistent with my initial understanding. Am I really forbidden from deviating from the exact 'specific purpose' of your comment....? I mean, I might as well make a thread about how we should nuke all right-wingers and then proceed to chastise anyone who says that killing is wrong because that wasn't the specific purpose of my post.
You asked what is sueing him going to accomplish, in response to me saying what I thought it would accomplish. Now, you start claiming someone is saying you are forbidden from deviating from the specific purpose of my comment... Do you play a victim like this in real life too?
Right now, there are very few downsides to what these people do. They make their claims, their sheep follow along and donate money and time for the cause, they are proven wrong, we laugh at them, some of the sheep leave, more join up, the money keeps flowing in as long as they keep making dire predicitions... Without any negative consequences, why would they ever stop. The bank robbery part was more humor then anything, as anyone (even someone with a poor grasp of english) would be able to make arguments refuting it. But if those who gave up their belongings or gave away all their money or whatever, joined in a class action lawsuit against the preachers who do this, you would quickly see a reduction of those making predictions of the end (as as a specific date and consequence) and a drastic reduction of those doing it a second time after their first prediction proves wrong.
I can definitely see how they are preying on vulnerable people. Why are they vulnerable? You could just as easily say these preachers are performing a valuable civil service by teaching people not to listen to stupidity.
