    Thank ee, sir.

I've used homeopathy in the past, but some of your points do make sense. I never used it for really serious things, just self limiting things. (I did use it once, during a round of seizures with my first baby, the seizures stopped, but they may have otherwise. I just don't know.) I rarely use it anymore. I kinda grew out of it. Also, it is something you can do at home, for self limiting things, where no harm will be done if the child isn't treated. When I, personally, see a pediatrician for my babies and children, I want them to consider all aspects, and I go to a Ped, for scientific MEDICALLY reasoned results.

Meaning I can give the homeo myself. If it is above and beyond what I feel comfortable with at home, I go Ped and Pharmacology. JMO. :)

In most cases I don't think homeo does any harm, but, in serious cases, or where the child is at risk, I want the best clinical medicine can give me. Goth, I do have to agree with your history of Homeopathy. I've read things about "sub molecular" things in how homeopathy works, but, for the life of me, I can't make sense of it. My dh minored in Physics and said he never heard of anything "submolecular" unless they were talking Atomic.

People do swear by it, as they do chiro and accupuncture. I have chronic pain (which, according to the literature is "supposed" to be susseptible to suggestion and placebos) and I never had Homeo, chiro or accupunture work for me at all. But, I know people who have gotten good results, and I won't argue with anyone who feels better after a treatment. Just not something that I found worked well for me. And I did use a homeo allergy remedy, which seemed to help a lot, but I also removed dairy friom my diet at the same time, so I can't say which it was.

The important thing is, You want a Ped who is good medically, is good with children and actually READS the latest literature. My Ped isn't 100%, but she does a good job, and doesn't roll her eyes too much. :)

His mother spent the first four days of his life in the ICU, so we had to pump the breastmilk and let him drink it by bottle

But even though Adolf Hitler, who said some incorrect and invalid things said 2+2 = 4. 2+2 does in fact equal four.

giving anecdotal stories of the horrors of certain therapies and providing stats taken by biased sources does not prove them invalid.

    kathy

(ps - i've very little experience with homeopathy, so i really don't have any reason to recommend a homeopathic dr, i just can't stand quackwatch)

glad to hear that mom and baby are better! wish i could make a suggestion in regards to the ped, we just use our family dr, which is what our provincial insurance covers, we don't get peds until we need a more specialized medical attention. can't afford homeopath or naturopath docs any ways. our family doc is pretty good, not perfect, but a very caring person. we've used him for at least 12 years, which makes visits easier since we know each other so well. it's a real continuity of care type of experience! we are lucky to get medical care from a small town/rural community medical center.

are you in the US? i have no clue how the system works there. is your family doc an option?

    enjoy that sweet bundle!!!

Most families in cities in the US use Pediatricians, in fact there are MORE Peds in the US than "Family Doctors." Some use family practitioners, but, as pediatrics has advanced so rapidly, including new information on nutrition, vaccination, allergy, ect, most families chose a pediatrician.

In rural areas, there is still the old family doctor, but in the cities and burbs, most people use Peds.

RE: right so you are saying chronic eczema can be cured simply by the suggestion that something might work?

Yes, it's called the placebo effect. Marvellous really. It's what accomplishes "faith healing" too.

RE: I very much doubt that my mum's chiropracter would claim to cure cancer - they deal with bones and muscles don't they?

Chiropractic was started by a butcher's assistant who decided to help a blind guy whose neck hurt. He wrenched he guy's neck, there was a click, and the guy could see. He then came up with the theory that all disease stemmed from misalignment in the spine. That's classical orthodoxy in chiropractic and many still believe it - that your orgone energies and chakras or whatever are affected by the spine, and that if you have a minute misalignment (a subluxation) it can kill you. And that if you align everything right you get super powers, tons of energy and become "clear" with your body thetans and... oops, wrong tinfoil hat brigade.

Some chiros recognise that their expertise is EXTREMELY limited and only valid for putting people who've been knackered in a crash back together - and even then only after X-rays and the like have ruled out soft tissue injury (which requires a real doctor). Unlike the poor parents of that kid whose head lilted to the side. The chiro grabbed the head - CRACK - and ruptured the up-to-that-point completely contained TUMOR on the spine. Kid was dead of cancer in a year and a half. Once cancerous material spreads through spinal fluid you're screwed.

RE: Yeah I would agree except for the fact that alot of GP's these days are quite happy and content to prescribe all manner of allopathic crap such as inhalers, antibiotics, even anti depressants to children..so its good to check out the alternatives.

Of course! I have never been opposed to alternative therapy, so long as said therapy has some degree of real research and VALID basis in fact. Homeopathy (where sugar pills cure!) and chiropractic (screw germ theory - tuberculosis is caused by spinal misalignment) are not.

    RE: You are rude.

    Truth hurts.

RE: Herbalism isn't alternative mate - herbalism is what proceeds allopathic practice - alot of remedies in general medicine come from herbalist origins - look at codeine - morphine.

    Herbalism isn't considered allopathy.

RE: I haven't yet met an alternative therapist who claims to be able to cure where allopathic remedy has failed -

    Well, I have, mate.

RE: rather the alternative therapists I meet claim to be able to work with the individual to find ways of dealing with their symptoms and boosting their immune system - i.e helping the individual help themselves. Also I doubt very much a chiropracter would say that cancer is caused by a misalignment of the spine or indeed a reiki practicioner would claim a twisted ankle is caused by a blocked sacral chakra. Are you going to stop generalising and have a sensible discussion?

Are you familiar with chiropractic at all? You talked of them working with muscles, so I guess not.

RE: No but you can feel it - anyone can.

    The hell?

RE: OK again I stipulate that herbalism is not alternative its simply the less fussy allopathic route. Yoga? So you have learnt something of energy flows etc round the body yet seem to be scorning that avenue of healing?

Given that we can't find these "energy flows" I tend to take that notion of middle ages Chinese needlepokery with a great deal of salt.

RE: Yep I read it all and tried my very hardest to understand it - all I can say is that when I have used homeopathic drops for myself and my son to cure chronic eczema - its worked!! sorry if you can't believe that but its the truth - so therefore you IMHO are wrong because it does work - I am no chemist and cannot prove according to the laws of chemistry because I do not understand them but I do know what has worked for me and what I would consider using before any allopathic remedy.

    Jesus Christ.

RE: I'm not sure how much more I can communicate this to you about homeopathy - you have stated it doesn't work and several people here have stated it does.

"Yeah! Five days into my son's cold, after taking the sugar pill it went away!!!" Yeah, symptoms often do in transient conditions.

RE: I mean my son was a tiny tiny baby only 3 months old when he had his homeopathic treatment - do you really think he fell for the power of suggestion? I

No, you did. Did you not consider that it might have cleared up by itself?

RE: believe you are giving misleading advice about something that can act as homecure for many people - giving parents the choice not to rush straight to the doctor but allowing them to think about other choices (including homeopathy) if they so wish - it has worked for me and my son -there is nothing more in terms of evidence I can provide.

You realise that it's because of this sort of thinking that for 200 years some people thought that it wasn't germs, but a spinal misalignment, that causes disease?

RE: Yeah I do believe in the tooth fairy as I believe in myself and myself is the friggin tooth fairy you patronising so n so Most homeopathic remedies (in my experience) are given as drops that don't taste of water they taste nasty - there is something in the water that works!!!!

It isn't what you're paying for - that's what 30x means. It's possibly the alcohol they use in the manufacture.

RE: The only sugar pills I came across where a homeopathic teething remedy which was shit - i only bought it once from Boots and wish I had never bothered

What the hell do you think lactose is? A protein? Would you please learn something about science before you talk about these things?

RE: Yeah ok - thanks for balancing my advice as obviously it would be foolhardy to rely soley on one person's medical opinion. I offered an opinion of a route to follow with regards to healthcare.

But when it comes to health care, you need to look at the foundation it's built upon. Allopathy isn't allowed to be done unless there's been research, studies, etc. and even then sometimes they get it wrong - witness Vioxx, the Dalkon Shield. So that being the case, imagine the true horror of trusting your life, literally, to someone who believes in some Victorian notion like orgone energy, or spiral chakras or something.

Homeopathy is literally no-medicine medicine. Chiropractic, unless it's being used to put someone back together who's been mashed up in an accident, is NOT gonna do much good - it can't cure AIDS or stop cancer.

RE: Its not even a route that I follow soley for myself or my son. When I took my son to the homeopath for his eczema I was told that he shouldn't have innoculations by the homeopath

Well I'm glad you saw the quackery for what it was.

RE: and I decided that was crap and got my boy innoculated anyway. Perhaps I will edit my original post to reflect your points and change

"the best thing you could do"

    to

"something you might want to consider is"

my carelesness and laziness of speech - I am sorry.

No, my mistake. I write that way and all, too - learned English in Lancy.

Sorry if I came across as hostile but quackery bugs me.

A closed mind is such a wonderful thing to waste.

There is obviously no point in arguing with some people. I for one would like to answer the OP's question. Where do you live? We have a great peed here in Jersey who does not push us to immunize. Does not push circumcision. Does not push meds at the first sign of a cold. She's been pretty good with our son. She was recommended by the chiropractor who probably saved his life because she was able to diagnose his allergies unlike our former peed who thought he had cystic fibrosis. Anyway, if you live around here I can give you here info. Otherwise maybe others on this list have a great peed in the area you live it.

Best wishes to you and your little guy and his mama.

    HippyLandscaper,

Sorry so late, my internet connection was just hooked up today after a long time without. SO happy to hear that everything is okay and you are now blessed with fatherhood and sounds like you will be a great one. Your little boy is beautiful and thanks for posting your pics! Congrats!

thank you, everyone. I hope I can be at least half as good as a parent as I want to be. This is some freaky shit. I've never been so nervous about anything in my life.

Hug him, love him, hold him, listen to him, pick him up when he cries, feed him when he is hungry, rock him when he is cranky, change him when he is wet or dirty, bathe him when he lets you, let your intuition in on your parenting (along with a lot of common sense) and you'll do OK!

    :)

So okay, anyone in Nebraska that can recommend a doc. You could go to Mothering.com and ask for referrals also. They might have more members in Nebraska.

And, oh yeah, do what Maggie says.

I know how to love him, and I do all the rest of the things Maggie says also. I just have the same fears that most other parents probably have or had with thier first child. It is a big step.

It IS a big step, realizing this is a good sign. I know you know how to love him, (your posts are very empathic) and you'll learn all the other things quickly. The lack of sleep and "personal time" and time alone with your womyn is the hardest part.

He's the Boss, for quite a long time to come. ;) You'll do fine. It's always good to see parents who care enough about their little ones to actually voice concern. Damn, I wish Ihad the internet when my first one was born.
