I'm listening to her right now. I still have the Bass Player magazine from I think it was 2008 with her on the cover. Here's the funny part I heard from a friend of mine who is on the local nominating committee that they were going to change the "Best New Artist" nomination criteria so they could nominate Lady Ga Ga for Best New Artist. I was also stoked to hear that Herbie Hancock was nominated against Beyonce for an award and beat her. Honestly I hope this trend continues. I made the decision to stop watching the Grammys the year Taylor Swift was nominated for that song about destroying some dudes truck for cheating with the verse melody from "Wonderwall" and Amy Winehouse were nominated for so many fucking awards. Honestly was this really the best music or best recorded music that came out that year. To me nominating this crap for "Advancing the art and science of recording" (the Grammy Mission Statement) is like calling McDonalds a four star restaurant. The American Music Awards and the World Music Awards are for handing out awards based on how many records an artist sells. The Grammy's are supposed to be about the industry judging what is the best of a particular year. It seems like the quality drops more and more each year as it get's easier to record in your apartment. I intern in a studio and have sat with recording, mixing and mastering engineers and critically listened to Major Artists with Major Recordings wondering how something that had a budget that big sounded so crappy from a production standpoint. Because of Pro Tools and Auto Tune it is easier for people who have no business making and recording music (i.e. models, dancers, fashion designers, reality t.v. stars etc.). If the drummer can't play in time we can easily point click and move all of the parts of the drum kit and move them until he is in time then loop the 4 bar section that we just made or cut and copy it for each part of a song. In the old days of Tape it would have taken 3 days with a razor blade to get the same result. If the singer has no sense of rhythm or time and can't sing in tune we have programs to fix it. I heard a story once about having to record Paula Abdul 2 words at a time in the studio back in the day. And at the end of the day this is what sells. And people get on here (and elsewhere) and bitch about why music today sucks. That's why I feel good knowing Esperanza Spaulding won the Grammy for best new artist. Maybe it will show people how big a record store really is. The media sure as hell won't. Stay Brown, Rev J
